im only asking as i went to see a friend today who makes radiators, and told me something !

Humbug - 11/9/06 at 12:02 PM

Polo 1.0 because:

1. it fits
2. it's light
3. price is OK
4. it seems to be "normal" one

Phil. S - 11/9/06 at 12:16 PM

Last month I changed from an Escort rad to a 1.0lt Polo rad because it is supposed to be far more efficient, and is lighter. I hope you're not going to tell me I shouldn't have done this.

DarrenW - 11/9/06 at 12:25 PM

I chose Micra cos it was recommended by Mac#1. Its what they use on Pinto engined cars and seems to work well.

graememk - 11/9/06 at 12:29 PM

micra because thats what the car came with

clockwork - 11/9/06 at 12:35 PM

Come on fess up, what'd he say?

graememk - 11/9/06 at 12:43 PM

did he tell you hes in love with you and wants a sex change so you can be together ?

is it anything to do with rads ?

DarrenW - 11/9/06 at 12:47 PM

Sex change idea certainly is interesting.

My guess will be something along the lines of when rebuilding Micra or Polo rads they use the same core so the cooling efficiency is exactly the same.

ch1ll1 - 11/9/06 at 12:48 PM

nearly said that, sure he was thinking that !

ch1ll1 - 11/9/06 at 01:09 PM

these are not my words

he said micra rads and polo rads are poo for cooling
mini rads can cool better !
so what you think?

DarrenW - 11/9/06 at 01:21 PM

which Mini?

He may be right, im no expert. All i know on my car is that the Micra rad has been fine so far although ive added some vents under nosecone and along bonnet to promote better air flow.

NS Dev - 11/9/06 at 01:30 PM

Polo one can't be that poo!!!

I certainly know of two 240hp+ VX engined westfields that run them with no cooling issues (no heaters fitted either)

ch1ll1 - 11/9/06 at 01:45 PM

just an old standard mini rad
im only saying what he said,
not my words

hes said get an old escort rad uprate it and it will be 10 better !

hes also said if i do it and have any heating prob ( i.e blow it )
he will pay for a new engine

so who knows

I run a Micra rad, after considerable thought I chose this one because....

.... it was free.

But my R1 motor runs at about 170ish and the stat doesn't bring the fan in until 226. Must be doing something right.

Phil. S - 11/9/06 at 02:28 PM

Well there's enough people running pretty powerful Westfields with Polo rads for me to feel pretty confident that your advisor is mistaken.

Danozeman - 11/9/06 at 02:31 PM

Polo one because it just about fits and its cheap and what most people use.

When i bought it the bloke reckons it wouldnt cool that well. I was told a MK2 escort one with different cores fitted would be much better buch much more expensive.

ch1ll1 - 11/9/06 at 03:13 PM

I RUN A MICRA RAD not had any probs

Well ive just blown the head gasket on my zx9
but that may not have anything to do with it !
but when i drove normal-ish ok
when i thrashed the poo out of it
it would always get very very hot !
hence why i went to see my mate and ask him !
he knows what hes on about ( or should do )
as he owns the place !

As most peeps used polo or micra ... i got a vw golf gti rad.... took the fans off and the sides off the rad core and chucked that bit in the bin.

bought 2 new cheap ebay polo cores +1 spare.

fitted gti sides to the polo rad core cut and modded the dual fan to a single fan which comes with a free twin speed fan and sensor switch.

All sitting ready to be fitted ... bloody nice job.. must post a pic some time...

Fitting to 1700 xflow usual mods....

ch1ll1 - 11/9/06 at 04:03 PM

thats why i thought i would ask you lot !
i just fitted what everyone else did

Micra... cheapest and it works!

Mark Allanson - 11/9/06 at 04:26 PM

I run a micra one with a 2.0i pinto, it is OK but borderline on cooling, if I hit traffic, the engine gets really hot, but to be fair, has not yet overheated. I have a fan from a Peugeot 406 to fit when I get a moment which should help things a bit.

ch1ll1 - 11/9/06 at 05:26 PM

so now here is the big question

now im swapping engines
do i keep the micra radiator
or upgrade my rs2000 rad ?
