HELP ME PLEASE
Markp - 21/4/06 at 06:29 PM

After MONTHS of working on the car I tried to turn it over for the first time.

Nothing happens with the engine, it sounds as though the starter motor is missing the ring gear. I have had the starter out and it spins with no problems.

It is a black top zetec with type 9 box, tiger lightened flywheel and the small type lucas sierra starter motor.

HELP ME PLEASE

Thanks Mark

Missing by too much or too little?

If too much, try spacing the motor out with some spacers.

Alternatively, go down scrappies and get one from a 1.8 CVH Sierra - worked first time on mine.

It doesn't seem to be reaching the fly wheel.

Whats the difference between the starter motors (1.8cvh), I thought that is what I had.

Cheers Mark

I have a starter motor from a 1.6 CVH 1981ish and a starter motor from a 1992 1.6 CVH EFi Sierra.

I dont really want to part with either of them, but if you would like to borrow one, that would be fine with me. I am in Mansfield, NG18.

I dont know if either would fit, but they cant be that different, both ran on type 9 boxes.

It is however the type of flywheel fitted that makes the difference. Any ideas what yours is?

Both of my flywheels are exposed for viewing if required.

Show me yours, and I will show you mine.

Always open to offers and all that, but mines buried deep in the depths of the garage!

or this?

DIY Si - 21/4/06 at 07:27 PM

Yup. Except mine's covered in mank. Sounds like you've got a different type of flywheel fitted.

Markp - 21/4/06 at 07:28 PM

It's the tiger lightened flywheel. Surley it can't be this difficult!

Krismc - 21/4/06 at 07:34 PM

i also got the FRS122 starter from tiger with there pinto lightened flywheel, looks like it may rub the side of the engine i may have to cut a inch or so off!

DIY Si - 21/4/06 at 07:35 PM

Not sure what they base it upon. That's what determines the starter. Try posting in the tiger bit. Someone must know what it is, since I haven't got a clue. But as you say, it shouldn't be too hard to figure out.

Mansfield - 21/4/06 at 07:39 PM

As I said, if you want to try either of mine you are welcome.

I think yours looks similar to my 1992 one.

Do you think your starter is constantly engaed, because my 1991 starter cant be.

Markp - 21/4/06 at 08:09 PM

thanks for the replys so far.

I have had another look (i know it dark) The starter looks as though it is hitting the engine where the sump flange is.

Is it the correct width? Rescued attachment starter.JPG

Markp - 21/4/06 at 08:12 PM

krismc.

Does yours say frs122?

Mine is LRS707!

This could be the answer

I have found the solution

I went and had a look at a car garage and picked up the lucas lrs543, it is slightly longer, put that in and works a treat

Life is good again!!
