(1) Hardened valve seats
(2) Just set the timing by the book road test and retard the ignition until any pinking stops. Pinking normally occurs in high gears at low RPM and high throttle opennings -- test procedure is warm the car up and try going up a steep hill from low rpm in a high gear.

(3) You can run unleaded without conversion using lead replacement additives -- also the valve seats will have some protection from the lead memory effect.

For more info try the MG usenet groups and the various MG and MG-Rover forums.

Just put some lead substitute and octane booster in the petrol and don't bother doing anything to the engine.

if your not going to doi many miles then i wouldnt bother doing any work!

if you plan to do lots then all exhaust seats need need sorting
but then that doesnt cost much

Yes you can get away without doing the valve seats for a quite a while BUT the timing must be retarded from the WSM figures.
Octane boosters and also higher octane modern fuels often contain pretty aggressive solvents are a bit iffy with the materials used in older fuel systems

The MG owners club reccommends Castrol Valvemaster plus. It's an octane booster and lead substitute in one. I've used this in my crossflow for 10k miles, fine so far.
