Hi,
Has anyone ever tried using the exhaust can from a motorcycle with a crossflow or any other car engine? Would they give much noise reduction or are
they to small for larger capacity engines?
Thanks
i have a second hand can i could let you have for £30 inc postage if you want to give it a try.
My logic would say (probably flawed) ....
As the revs on a bike are say 50-60% more than a car engine I would guess that the throughput of exhaust gases for say a 1600 XF would be similar to a
1000cc bike engine.
don't think that logic is entirely flawed, but then not entirely right either!
The noise is more linked to other factors as well as actual cc displacement.
Cam timing has a big influence, as does the cc per cyl, rather than overall, as this influences the size of each "slug" of gas through the
silencer.
worth a try though, but I doubt it will be enough for sva. Definitely fine for "post sva" though!
A stock R1 can is quieter than the repackable can from ST that I had on my blade cart, and the ST can was of a reasonable size and probably sold for
car engines too, so I reckon it would be OK. Make sure you get a stock can though, any after market slip-on etc will almost certainly be too noisy.

We've used a bike can, not sure from which bike, sounds OK, not too loud, but we are going to measure shortly. Here's a pic

thanks for the replies. Looks like its worth persuing then I'll have a rumage in the loft and try to find the can that came off my old VFR.
cheers
I know a guy running a busa can on a toyota 20 valve. It sounds very nice and actually quite quiet. Very cheap on ebay as well.
I am curious as to weather one would work on a turbo engine. Then I dont know any bike cans that are 3 inch inlets.

I ran an standard R1 exhaust on my old 1300 Xflow locost.
It was not too loud, looked good and was cheap.
