Westfield gearlever remote fitment
the moa 2 - 20/1/05 at 09:14 PM

Well i bought one !

I thought it would be a good part of the car to spend a bit extra doh on, not that ive managed to save money on many parts of the car really.

Im having trouble figuring out how to fit it , i have read a few post on this forum and one shows "dave jenkins i think" building his own but other than that cant find much on the net on actually fitting it. I suppose you have to buy the full kit from westfield before you get any sort of help or instructions.

It looks like the fork thats meant to slot into the gearbox selector shaft is too big, i have hopefully attatched some pictures below.

I think probably the bit of the selector shaft that swivels when you move the lever from side to side should come off some how and then the westy remote will fit but i don't know if it comes off or not.

This was originally gonna be a how too guide being that i couldn't find any sort of guide . But i seem to have got stuck a bit early on.

I just previewed & dont see my pics so if u wont to look into the photo archive. as i can never figure these image tags out.

Moa,

There is a black plastic "clip" for want of a better word that is on the selector shaft. If you clean more of the greese off you might see it easier.

Remove the black plastic thing.
Fit westy remote from the rear (where you've removed the plate).
Fit the plastic bit onto the selector shaft on the Westy remote.
Fit the gear lever to the westy remote.

Job done!

I can see it !

But how do i get it off.

And what was i doing wrong with the images?

You need to include the http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk on your image code. Contrary to what the forum code says in the pic archives...

Get a screwdriver under the edge of it but be carefull, I snapped a bit off mine whilst removing it, but it still works.

It sort of clips on, but I can't 100% remember I fitted mine about a year ago!

Just fiddle with it till it comes off

Right im off to fiddle then see ya in bit hopefully it'll be sorted.

I feel stupid now as clip came straight off, didn't realize it was plastic and that it was just sitting ontop of the shaft.

plastic clip off
plastic clip off

What i did to get pic was click properties on picture and got source code so hoefully this should do it.

gear lever bit too close now

Now my Lever is really near following my previous attempt at bending the it . I think i can now cut it down so its a nice stubby !

Cheers for all your help much appreciated.

On my homemade extension, I made it so you don't need that crappy fork at the front of the westy extension, and all the extra play it gives.

I knocked out the roll pin that retains the bellcrank on the rear of the ford selector shaft, roll pinned on a shaft extension, then roll pinned the Ford bellcrank to the rear of the extension. This in my opinion is a much neater solution.

I couldn't work out why Westy didn't do this, but then MikeR gave an interesting explanation!

Moa,

On the gearlever the painted black part is bonded on with rubber.

Take off the lever, take into the open fresh air and heat up the bulbous part with blowlamp.
It will eventually pull off BUT not till it's created a foul stinking smoke cloud

This will leave you with a nice stubby lever if you want.

You could always grind it off but smell is the same.

Don't forget to knock out the reverse thingy
