I bought my MK Indy last year and its slowly got worse at starting up.

CBR900RR 98 Fireblade


I replaced the spark plugs a while ago to give it that extra kick.


Now its got to the point where it takes me 5 minutes or so to start it up but when I give it a little bit of throttle it pop an bangs and cuts out. I think it might be the fuel pump I have unplugged the line just before the carbs and primed the pump and it does pump but Im thinking is it enough pressure? what else could it be?

Is there any new ones you would recommend? ABPerformance were just about to send me one just before christmas but after many emails he is now unreachable

Assume you've got a fresh air filter in there?

Air filter? its not a fresh one no. Dont see why that would matter?

Have you got clean fuel in the float bowls? Bike Carbs generally need little pressure and if there is fuel in the floats it should fire with choke unless jets are a mess.

I have a CBR600 that suffers if I leave it, I think the fuel is going off then on start it fires but is not clean and soots plugs up.

Might be worth dribbling some fresh fuel in the bell mouths with clean plugs and see if it fires and runs immediately.

Surprisingly a dodgy kill switch can cause similar issues.

Have you checked fuel filter?

Just had a look and I don't think there is a fuel filter :/ I can't full see in the tunnel before the rear wall but can't imagine there will be one fitted there as it will be a pain to access. What fuel filter are people using for their indy I'll fit one while I'm at it.

Have you checked the filter in the bottom of the pump?

So there fuel still coming out after the fpr before the carbs when the pump is primes.

Also took apart the carbs today gave them a clean including the needles and still won't start

Have you got a spark? Is there fuel in the floats? If you back off drain screw fuel should come out of the drain. Does it stink of fuel when you are turning over?

All the floats are fine and no can't really smell fuel.

If I remember correctly, those block the main jet air tube when you have dynojet kit.

If fuel is getting to the floats and you've got a spark then sounds like issues with the carb jets. If its been stood a while its possible.


From that image you posted it does look like there is some fuel around. Have you checked plugs/ spark?

In this weather, I start my 600 choke only, no throttle and let it warm up before introducing air.

Yup bought new spark plugs to be sure

Have you checked the new plugs are sparking though? Could be an issue with the coils/HT leads.
Did you set the gaps on them?

I'm still thinking it's likely to be a blocked jet. Strip them all out and soak in carb cleaner overnight and blast them off with compressed air.

Air, fuel, sparks are the only things you need (and compression, but I'm going to say that's fine as it has been starting and running etc)

Carbs are sensitive to old fuel, unleaded goes off after 90 days and gums the jets up...

Had the carbs balanced recently?
