open diff to LSD

would like to know if it is possible to take the lsd bits out of my lsd bolt on and transfer it to my push in none lsd diff

Sierra diff i assume?
You can't use the push-in shafts with the ford LSD, they have to use bolt-on ones


You can swap the whole rear end to the bol-on setup or make hybrid shafts
Otherwise the aftermarket lsd's will fit in your current diff

Oh really?

I thought you could. I have never done it before but thought i read somewhere you could. I think i wrongly informed some one just now. I'll go back to the discussion and client myself.

I have nearly gathered all the bits to swap over to the bolt on lsd but if I can just change the internals of the diff would save me a lot of work converting car to discs on the rear

the problem is that the ford LSD requires one long stub and one short one - the open diffs have 2 equal length ones

I'm sure making one shorter is not impossible, but making one longer is not so easy !

Quaife and TranX diffs are meant to fit in open diffs - so they can't use the flanges from a ford LSD either (quaife sell diffs complete with flanges for the cosies etc - but at a price!)

I did the swap a couple of years ago. From 3.92 push in to 3.62 LSD bolt on. Took the tripode joints off the driveshafts and replaced them with lobros, swapped the diffs and bolted it all up. The lobro joints had the same internal spline as the tripodes so was a straight swap. My original build donor bits had all come from an 85 2.0L DFTH carbed sierra.
I know there are various varieties of sierra donor, parts may vary and maybe I was lucky but it was a very simple swap. (I never took the stubs out of the LSD so didn't even know they were different.)

whatt he said ^^^

as long as you have the right size of push-in shaft then you can fit the lobro (bolt on) CV to one end

and I've still got a pair of bolt-on CV's in need of a home

the other pair of the car went to make hybrid shafts for some on here too - along with the push-in shafts from my dad's old 2.0 pinto estate)

So you want to keep the drums? When I changed from a 3.62 open push in diff to a 3.92 viscous LSD with bolt on shafts I just cut the disc flanges off the bearing carriers and carried on with my 10 inch drums.

This is good information to know for those of us needing a Sierra diff.

I have bolt on drive shafts (we call them axles or half shafts - the one attaching the transmission to the diff we call the driveshaft :-)

I need the diff to go with them for my Ginetta, but I keep finding open diffs with push in ax... drive shafts.

It looks like I need to find "and I've still got a pair of bolt-on CV's in need of a home"...
