Here in the States I am having a problem finding the proper parts for my 1300 to 1600cc engine swap. It involves changing the transmission from a type 2 to a type 3. The type 2 had a 16 spline output shaft and the type 3 has a 20 spline output shaft. I can't find a 20 spline slip yoke in the US (it was only used on out early 70's Ford Pinto that is different than your Pinto) so will the output shaft from my old type 2 fit in my new type 3 tranny? I know it is a long shot but worth a try. Tks Russ
Hi Russ. Will delve into the dark end of my lock-up, over the weekend, because I may have a spare p/shaft. Will check the splines, and let you know.
P/shaft end/"yoke" has 16 splines, will fit over 22mm dia shaft. I was told that it came from UK Ford model, of Kent (Cross-flow) engine vintage.
Can you post a pic?
Just to clarify, can you ID the trans types 2 & 3? Or are they as per Burton catalogue description?
Quick thought - what dia is the 20 spline output shaft?

Ok I was able to get some more dimensions. Sorry they are in inches. The tranny is the type 3 according to Burtons catalog. The slip yoke has 20 splines and the output shaft on the tranny measures .867" OD and it looks like the OD of the yoke that slips into the tranny needs to be 1.2". That is as close as I can get on that yoke ID because the output shaft is in the way. Russ
Hi Russ, here's what you asked for :-
16 Spline yoke, for 22mm output shaft -

If you're looking for 20 splined yoke, clearly this won't suit. Its as per fitted to early (1970s) Ford Escorts, and some Capris.
"Doughnut" type joint - (which was fitted to some UK Ford Sierra models),
And yes, there may well be a space problem with fitting such a doughnut joint. The g/box output shaft diameter is bigger than 1.0ins, and there are 25
splines. Shame these won't fit.
POOH!!!!! This is becoming a nightmare. Do you know if the tranny output shaft can be changed out for a 16 or 25 spline one?
It might be worth investigating Capri parts. They were imported into the States from Europe in the early 70s under the Mercury brand rather than
Ford. The base model had a 1600 Kent crossflow and 4 speed transmission (type 3?).

Thanks. I will look into that. I may have found a Pinto prop shaft in Washington State. I'm waiting for them to check the dimensions. Wish me luck. Russ
Finally found a drive shaft in Washington State and it is on its way.
Now I can proceed. I never realized there were so many different slip yokes!!!! Thanks for all your help. Russ
Hi Russ - Glad to hear you solved the prob. Came across this thread, which includes coupla p/shaft front ends (yokes), thought you might be
interested.
