Stiffer Type 9 Gearbox Mount
davidimurray - 28/11/14 at 08:40 PM

Started stripping the car today and found that the reverse switch has taken a knock and the top was hanging off. My mount is very soft so I think it has moved around and hit the tunnel. Seen a couple of suggestions for alternatives but was wondering what the common consensus is on the best replacement?

Not sure of the best solution but I have one of these .... although not fitted it yet .... didnt get it from here but i believe its cheapest from caterham !!!!

I got one of these for my anglia type 9, they also do a stiffer version. Same as the caterham one above I think.

Thanks everyone. Am I right in thinking that they are different hole centres to the standard unit so I will need to make some mods?

I got the cortina hd mount and it's not only a different hole pitch its a different height (it pushes the box up). My tunnel is so tight it just won't fit so if you want to try it you can have it for £10.

The only other option I can find that is a straight swap for the Sierra mount is £100

Thanks Peter

Have you got a photo of the mount? Had a quick google and the Cortina mounts that came up all looked very different.

Cheers

I will do a couple of pictures tomorrow with the two types side by side

Take the original apart, and replace rubber by pouring in a 2 part PU resin, 85 shore A will be firm.
Might be a good idea to use plastercine to make a makeshift mould.
Cast my own bushes with success.
Vibratecnics makes a mount, which is very good. Persaonally, with hind sight I would copy the design, as I found it seems fairly simple considering the price I paid!

In this picture the top unit is a standard Sierra mount and the lower is a 'Heavy Duty' mount which is £20 odd quid on ebay or from Burtons etc. The different mounting hole widths is quite easy to sort out with a suitable plate.

This end on picture with the units both at roughly the same mounting height shows the problem. Unless you can change the height of your current mounting point then with the HD mount the gearbox is pushed 15mm higher which on my car would make the gearbox foul the top of the transmission tunnel I am not about the re-weld my mount on a nicely new powder coated chassis.

I am going to get a new Sierra mount and see how I get on with that on the finished car before I consider spending £95 on a Vibra-Technics type

If the HD one I have got is any use to you then you can have it for £10, its been bolted to the car when I then found it didn't fit but never used.

Thanks for the photos Peter.

One of the guys at work reckons he's got a Cortina mount kicking about so I'm going to borrow it and see what I can mock up.

Got the mount now and just sussing out how to make an adapter to fit/lower it. With it lower I was thinking about the old cup/bolt arrangement being lower - presume I could junk these with the Cortina mount?
