Ford Gearbox Mounting

Apologies if this is a repeat topic.

OK - Am using a Capri 4-speed g/box in conjunction with 1600 Xflow. Initially mounted g/box using Capri donor g/box mount + plate. This hangs below chassis, and can (yeah - it did!!) foul on anything projecting up from the ground e.g. speed-bumps, or highway debris etc.

So I'm looking for a suitable g/box mount, which has a smaller under-profile, i.e. a smaller bottom! (Mind drifts off to that Keira Knightly ad, where she rides a motorbike).

Back to the question in hand. What did all you T9/Escort/Capri g/box users fit for your g/box mount?

Caterham do a smaller mount or you can hard mount it with a bar and perhaps some 1/2" rubber to take the big clunks out

I made my own from polybushes. My gearbox had to sit at a jaunty angle so here's what I did:


And the finished bracket. The outer cradle picks up on the original cross member bolts and the middle bit bolts to the tapered tailshaft casting:

caterham and westfield both use this one:

4spd type mount :)

its actually justthe old ford 4 speed one from a mk2 escort or simmilar (caterham are often the cheapest source though)

the same mount is avaible in differing shore hardnesses too. ebay has one listed as Lotus Cortina and is stiffer then the Ford OEM version, helps to stop the gearbox moving in tight tunnels when afterburners are lit for a hard launch

Pardon??? With an ancient 1600 Xflow?? There'll be nothing hard about any of my launches.

At least, not until I've got the car running satisfactorily, with the Xflow, and then I might think about playing with another 4-pot. Suzuki Swift maybe? Is there a RWD gearbox which fits?

ah, sorry, let me rephrase.

remove Launch and replace with Lunch

will help with poor old asthmatic, wheezy, wobbly old xflow from bashing gearbox against tunnel.

Therefore, it'll be a "Hard Lunch".

Either i) a very hard-boiled egg, or ii) a lengthy session with that old Fleet Street hack, Lunchtime O'Booze! (Former Private Eye reporter).

I wouldn't worry about the stiffness of the westfield/caterham style mount - its rock solid compared to the sierra one:

I might be wrong but I thought you could use an SJ / Vitara box (without the transfer box obviously, I know its totaly seperate on the SJ's)
no idea how strong or heavy they are or what the ratios are like...

Thanks for the suggestion. Noted your comment about separate xfer box; that would be useful. All thoughts for future mods.
