OK, I feel like a dumbass now but I gotta ask about the hoses for the radiator.
I think I have done a mistake somewhere in my car.
I´m using a Pinto and a Micra radiator and an expansiontank (not the one on the micra rad).
Not using any heater or something similar, because it´s not important to get the car approved by swedish SVA.
Take a look at the pic and tell me the correct hosing.
On the pinto the top hose goes to the thermostat housing and the bottom hose goes to the water pump. I don't know what the 3 is as there is only one connection on my waterpump. The small connection on the stat housing is blanked off with a blocked pipe. You can 'T' the pipe to the manifold and connect your expansion tank in there.
Basically as Pete says, I used number 3 to the bottom of the expansion tank, and the inlet manifold outlet (not shown in your diagram) to the top.
Number 1 on the thermostat housing is just an air bleed to prevent locking.

injection(?)
So the small pipe on the rad (2) should be blocked

The 3 goes to my inlet manifold. I extended it with a piece of copper plumbing pipe with the intention of 'T'ing in a header tank but I never did. It would be handy for topping up though. The one on the radiator filler neck goes into an expansion bottle from my Escort radiator
jonte, i think that if you do it as shown in your last picture, it will work fine. Mine was slightly different, i dont think my water pump has a
number 3 outlet, i used a t in the bottom hose to go up to the bottom of the expansion tank.
edit: in fact, my top hose has a tee in it too, to the top of teh expansion tank. My number 5 i looped round to the other side, by the altenator,
where the normal heater hoses would go.
one possible problem, is that i think the system will need bleeding when you fill it as there is no outlet at the highest point in the circuit. Mine
lets air out thru the top hose into the expansion tank. Yours (like that) would need the plug removing from the thermostat housing (number 1?)

I sealed no1 with a short hose and a bolt, it will be easier to bleed the system out with this

marks right, mine has a bolt and a jubilee on the end too.
i was wrong about number 3, mine does have it its just not where i remembered it! linked to number 5 via copper pipe and some compression fittings.
Jonte, you have it exactly the same as me now, except for the expansion tank coming off the rad
Hi,if I havent got no.3 on water pump do you think I can connect top of rad overflow outlet2 to top of expansion tank 2 with bottom of expansion connected to inlet manifold hose somewhere over exhaust manifold-does anyone see a prob with this-also ideas for filling or could i fill via exp tank?Mike
on my 1.6 3 from the pump runs round through the heater matrix to the inlet manifold however i've replaced the matrix with a t for the feed of my
water pump.
however, at fast idle, the expansion bottle fills right to the top with fluid. i believe this is a product of the run round the block being pumped,
but also because the small breather runs to the top of the rad.
looking at production cars, the filler from the expansion bottle always runs to the bottom hose, so before the thermostat opens, there is no pumping
effect as such, more suction from the header tank.
it doesnt seem to affect the system much, but am i asking for trouble in not rectifying this? as presumably as the air gets forced out of the bottle,
it is pushed into the top of the rad. should i put a restrictor in the feed from the header tank to stop 'back flow'
