As I've spent the last few days trying to find a starter motor I thought I'd share my success.
I have fitted a Type 9 gearbox to a '94 1.8 Zetec with an Escort sump.
I've used a starter motor from a CVH 1.8 Sierra. £59 from Cargo.
I've had to sand 3 of the ribs flush with the sump to get it to fit but the pinion and throw are spot on.

I am going to use a Zetec and Type 9 combination and was pleased to see the results of your efforts and advice.
If you have already fitted the clutch and release mechanism can you advise on the parts needed for this please?
I shall be using cable operation.

Andy I see from your photo that you have blocked of the crakcase breather, what have you done as a replacement breather vent

I haven't done the clutch yet - that's next on the list. I'm going to use a Dunnel flywheel as it's only 6KG. It may be possible
to fit a CVH cover and plate to the Zetec flywheel. Don't use the standard ones even though the splines are right. The fingers are the wrong
length. I'll post again when I've sorted the clutch.

If you use a Dunnell flywheel it's simply a lightened Zetec original item .. and good it is .. you can use the Zetec cover plate but use a clutch plate from a Capri V6. You will also find the clutch face is around 12mm closer to the block compared to a Pinto flywheel so you need a deeper clutch release bearing .. QH133 is the part number .. This keeps the fork well back which is better for correct pivot operation .. otherwise, you go past the horixontal point and it gets mechanically more difficult to depress the clutch.
This is what I've done so far.
I've got a 2litre zetec with 1.8 escort sump/water pump.
I've used the escort flywheel and pressure plate. The cvh doesn't fit on the pegs ( bigger) The escort flywheel is smaller and lighter than
the 2l mondeo.
But the splines on the clutch don't match my input shaft! The clutch for the 2l do but that won't go ( to big) but the cvh cluth plate fits!
So I've got flywheel from 1.8 and pressure plate from 1.8 but clutch plates from cvh.
The dust cover from a cvh sierra fits with a slight mod. as does the starter motor.
So in theory I'm there just need to see if clutch releases ok.

Surely you me Flywheel off the Crankshaft?
Have to ask the idiot question first (hopefully you won't take offence)
You *have* undone the 6 bolts holding the flywheel on, haven't you?
If not, this can be difficult, and I found a good solution was
put a couple of long bolts through in the clutch cover mountings
put engine on the floor
Using a long piece of metal bar between the bolts to hold the flywheel in position, undo the flywheel-crank bolts with the longest breaker bar you
can find.
Not ideal as you're putting load on a couple of things that shouldn't really be loaded but I've used it several times without
incident.
If you have undone the bolts and it won't come off, spray it with penetrating oil and bash the flywheel with a soft rubber mallet.
