ok so the availabilty of suitable manual boxes for the bmw v8 engines make them a bit of a no go
i see there are plenty of diffrent rover v8s so which one do i look for ideally, and which is easier carbs or efi?
before you totaly rule out the V8 BMW, what about making your own bellhousing ?

by what i hear from my mate with the v8 cortina he doesnt like the injection models due to electrical issues and most people say the carb 3.5 is much
better than the 3.9 thats not to say dont get the 3.9 as its a ok engine.
Gearbox wise is a pain as most come with the 3 speed auto box i think which end up in your garden collecting dust and water.....
I still think the bmw engine is the best if you can make ye own bell housing or get one done for you.
look at the dna forum for the murci which people have been using the m73 engines with manual boxes......

I am building a kit with a Rover V8 in it and for me with no prior mechanical experience it has been a great engine. It's powerful enough for a
seven based kit (think mine will come in just over 200bhp and it's standard). The aluminium block is not as heavy as everyone seems to think and
its easy to work on.
3.5 is the safest option. Others seem to have the slipping liner issue. This can be rectified with top hat liners however. Not all higher capacity
engines fail. The more capacity = more power though. It all depends on how big you stash of cash is.
Don't be thinking the Rover V8 option is cheap and easy though. Building one to a decent level costs a good amount and the bell housing issue is
a pain. In my car the standard Range Rover/Disco/Defender bellhousing is to long and it makes the gear change lever to far back. I needed a 2wd
bell from a SD1. These are getting rare and I have seen them on ebay go for £200+
Carbwise I have found the webber 500 to be the most popular by far and everyone who has one raves about them. Ignitionwise I went for megajolt but
equally people have good results from dizzys. Then there is always full EFI......
What about a Lexus V8 or BMW one??

The gearbox fitted to a 328/325/m3 is the same as fitted to the bmw V8. About £80 to buy.
the late 90's 5 series 4.0 V8 bmw came with manual boxes for sure and these are dirt cheap to buy these days as no one
can afford to run a large engined petrol car on the road.

What makes you say that? I've had a 1993 E34 530 touring with manual box, my mate's had a similar vintage 540 touring with manual box and another has had a 1993 530i saloon with manual box...all were awesome cars and all had V8s....so the engines can be mated to manual boxes...

PS think the 530s were 5 speed, and the 540 6 speed...
There are a lot more manual 530i V8s, 540i manuals are rare and dear. You'll want the 540i engine mated to a 530i flywheel, clutch and 'box

For pure spares, try FAB Direct but they're not the cheapest....think my V8 diff was c. 300
