Hi there...
You all seem to use the ford gearbox with that special Bell-housing in combination with a 20XE engine.. Is there a special reason why?
I was planning on using the Manta 1.8s gearbox since it fits instantly!!
I use that setup in my current car (Opel GT) and it workes perfectly!!
Am I overlooking something?

No, nothing wrong with that idea at all, in fact I do wonder the same thing myself when I have a couple of manta 1800 'boxes but am using a ford
in my locost. The main reason though is that you can uprate the Ford much more easily and I know from personal experience that neither the Ford or GM
'boxes are very strong! (I broke 3 manta 'boxes in my old 16v manta exclusive, and 2 ford ones in my mates old rally car behind a 16v)
Thereford the main reason is the easy availability of Quaife/Tran-x etc gearkits for the ford, whereas nothing at all is available for the Getrag 240
(manta) gearbox.
I know of a few people running the Getrag behind standard 16v's in westfields though, but if you run throttle bodies etc and have around 200hp
then the getrag will be at it's limits. (so will the standard ford type 9 though!)
I ve heard of people using the getrag box in combination with the 20LET engine (turbo) with over 250 BHP --> not a problem.....
You can also use the gearbox from a Omega, I'm not sure which one, but I can find out.... I've heard is't even stronger...
What's the MT75 good for in terms of power?

What's a MT75??
Forgive me if I ask a stupid question but I'm new at this....

the MT75 was fitted to later 2.0L DOHC sierras (and Granadas ?)
Stronger box than the type 9 but no / few uprated component options available for them.

Ahhhh, now I get it...
I'm not really into ford-parts.....
I'm more of a Vauxhall guy....
I'm pretty sure the manta-box is strong enough though....
I'll probably be using one...

I'm going to use a gearbox from an Omega 2.5 V6 (R28) together with a Saab 2.0 turbo engine... (Thank you GM for using the same bolt pattern for
gearboxes since -94 )
One biggest advantage with the newer Omega boxes is that they use hydraulic clutch instead of wire. Compared with the Ford gearbox it's also a
lot easier to move the gearstick to suit you car
The Ford M75 box has got an integeral bellhousing, so it won't match up to the vx/opal engine so it cannot be used.
Azrael, I have had the conversation many times about the use of the manta 1800 'box with the XE engine, and I know people use the LET with it.
All I know is I have had 2 cars with this combination of engine and 'box (Opel Manta Exclusive and RWD Peugeot 205 (both built by me) and broke
three of these gearboxes with a 205 bhp 165 ft-lb naturally aspirated engine.
That's all the advice I can give!
I appreciate it!!!
I'll think the whole thing over once more!!
It's also a matter of cashflow you know...
I think it would be cheaper for me to use a Manta-box......
+ the speedo-cable will also fit like a glove --> I'm planning on using the same speedo and other gauges I have in my GT...
Thanks for the advice though!
