Gearbox options?
coozer - 17/5/10 at 01:26 PM

For my next trick the standard type 9 is tooooooooo long... about 50% too long.

Is there a cheap easy way to get rid of the extension at the back of the box or is there any other box that's a lot shorter?

Depending on the outcome of this Q my next question may be considerably more dumb in a dumb sort of fashion.

Get your thinking caps on

LG,
Steve

it depends on the problem, if you want the gear stick near the front then a type 9 from a transit, the stick comes out of the top of the main box, but it does still have the bit out the back, but its got no stick place, i would guess that could be modded so its not there if someone knows what they are doing.

Correcto, but will it bolt up to a Zetec??

The Sierra MT75 is quite short when you take the gear lever mounting frame off, would guess 150 + mm shorter than a T9.

There were a company at Stoneleigh doing replacement gearboxes for the type 9 in which the gearbox was a load smaller and shorter and just had a massive extension for gearstick. I will try and find out what the company were called. Sorry i can't help more.

I saw them too. The gear lever was on a remote, like the old mini used to have. Cant remember what they were called either!! Is it on the traders list in the brochure?

a transit MT75 is totally different from a car box, but transit type 9 could be made very short as the gear select comes direct out the top of the gearbox, all the bit on the back is, is a cover over the shaft, how short do you need it

As short as that would do, the suzuki gearbox is tiny in comparison. I need some space to get a decent length, say 5" prop between box and tranny with two UJ's.

Is it possible to...
A) take the cover off standard type 9 and move the output shaft back?
B) Use a transit MT75 with an adapter plate?
C) Use the SJ gearbox with an adapter plate?

Last one is favourite but the starter motor mounting problem then arises....

one of my mates has a blitz 4x4 (also SJ based)

he looked at a few engine swaps (inc. VAG 1.9 TDi - someone was making adapters for the vitara's I think)
but in the end he got a vitara engine (1.6 I think) because it was cheap and easy - there is always the V6 though

bj928 - 18/5/10 at 12:51 PM

the type 9 out of a 4x4 transit then, early one, hens teeth though, or a T5 like the sierras have was available as a 4x4 in the CJ7 type jeeps, don't know how short both are though, another option, don't know how it would work but worth a look for a very short box, would be somehow use a mondeo mk1 4x4 box or maybe an RS2000 escort mk5ish 4x4 box, not sure how the mondeo/escort box would work as they were both trasverse mounted engines but it might be doable.

^^ thats a thought - you'd have alot more room if you didn't have the seperate transfer box.......
