What's this sensor, we took it out when trial fitting the carbs today (since replaced), it lives just below the inlet manifold at the front of the engine (1.8 Zetec blacktop), just wondered what it is. Rescued attachment Sensor.jpg

Don't think so, that's on the thermostat housing, it appears to be hollow if that's any pointer

There maybe two, 1 for the instruments and 1 for the ecu? Dunno haven't got a zetec and am guessing, good chance I'm talking out of my ar5e!

You're right, there are two but they're both on the thermostat housing.
Oil pressure sensor maybe? can't think what else could be poking into the block

It is a coolant sensor.

The one in the top used for the engine management, on all I've measured/used are M12x1.5 with an 'o' ring seal. This is the same as the Bosch 'Cosworth' sensor,often used with third party ECUs, but the sensor element is longer than a Ford one and can foul the thermostat.

The Focus 'blacktop' engine uses a cylinder head temperature sensor for the engine management (which also drives the dash gauge) and has no tappings in the thermostat housing. Although the head has the tapping for a CHT sensor, early 'blacktop' Mondeo engines used the 2 sensors in the thermostat housing.

I don't know why the European spec engines went over to a CHT. As its an alloy head the difference in readings is minimal. However the American, looking at the SVT/ST170, engine continued with a CWT in the thermostat housing. This one is a push-fit through an 'O' ring retained by a hairpin clip.

Mmmmm, so I've now got three temp sensors by the look of it, two in the T housing and one in the block

1 in the thermo housing is the fan switch i think. That looks like a cylender head temperater senser.

As I've got a bit of a jumble of different parts from different cars i.e both block and T housing sensors, does it matter which one I use to drive the temp gauge
