So the Duratec install is not so temporary now, so guess it's the basis for a few years of upgrades until I blow the bugger up!

GEARBOX

I was going to have to get a Duratec to Type 9 bellhousing anyway - am I just as well ditching the Type 9 and going straight to a T5???

INTERNALS

T'internet research suggests the stock internals are good for 230-ish BHP... assuming one was to go down the forced induction route aiming for 300-ish BHP, then what internal mods would be necessary???

T5 is a different fitment to the T9 IIRC and there isnt an off the shelf bellhousing for the T5 box to suit the duratec. Not yet anyway.

Plenty of people are running 300bhp through std type 9s in sevens and they seem to cope ok. If you wanted a HD one then the gearkit isnt much money and I can build you a box up.

Internals:

The weak point is the rods, limit RPM to 7000 on std ones. And this is where the power limit comes from, if you want more naturally aspirated you need to up the limit more (to 8000) and higher CR.

For forced induction, if you are keeping the revs down then you could use std rods as there is only marginally more force on them. Forged pistons are a must though for long term reliability if you want to run anything more than about 0.5 bar.

I went for pistons and rods from the US. Pistons worked out about £320 for the set and rods were about £280.

That seems phenomenally cheap for a set of steel rods, they are ~£175 each from Burton. I know they aren't exactly a cheap place, but that's a big difference.

Cheers David... these guys HERE do a Duratec to T5 bellhousing.

Are the Type 9 and T5 boxes roughly the same weight?

Also, for Turbo - I take it you're running standard cams and valves... if so, and assuming you changed the rods and pistons, what amount of boost / revs do you anticipate using, and what kind of power figure???

Forged in China from US steel and finish machined in America. Machined all over, shot peened and x-rayed. Supplied in weight matched sets with ARP big end bolts too

Rated to 10,000rpm apparently, but as they will only see 7500rpm max they were fitted more for piece of mind than to push them to their limits.

Even if you wanted the most expensive ones they still only work out at around $750 for a set.

Performance car parts in the UK are a rip off.

T5 is a bit heavier I think, but much more heavy duty.

I intend to run the std cams as they should theoretically suit forced induction quite well as they are low overlap (short duration) and high lift. Someone out there has made forced inducton cams for the duratec though as Caterham had some for the X330, but I bet they are massively expensive. I may play around in the future and see if a very mild FR cam will produce any more power.

The forged pistons are 10:1 CR and I intend to run 1 bar of boost. If the Caterham X330 at 0.8bar is anything to go by (330bhp) I am hoping for around a similar power figure at 7000rpm and about 220lbft or torque from 1800rpm upwards.

I am Rotrex supercharging...if you want a turbo manifold I can do the laser cut plates to suit if you give me some dimensions.

I would supercharge rather than turbo though, nice smooth power delivery and lots of low down grunt. More expensive though.

Belt driven from the crank as usual.
