tomgregory2000 - 11/10/09 at 07:59 PM

So in the quest for more horse power than one of these could give me for resonable money and keep drivability

i am now the proud owner of one of these all alloy engine's

TURBO POWER!!!!!!!!!!!

Rather super lightweight racing flywheel and rigid paddle clutch

And a nice all alloy gearbox

Description

This engine (known as an sr20det) is normally found in a nissan 200sx, and this engine is putting out 321bhp the only mods needed to reach this level of horsepower is bigger injectors(running 760cc), the stainless manifold, 3" exhaust and upgraded wastegate actuator, the limiting factor is the standard turbo, but it should make my car shift a bit.

First job is to give it a propper good clean, its mucky.

Will keep this updated as i get on with the change from one good engine to a mental one

Tommy

That is going to go like hell!!!

I look forward to seeing that upgrade progress

Davey D - 11/10/09 at 09:53 PM

If it is still running the original turbo, then it really is being pushed to its limit. If its running bigger injectors, then it will need some kind of mapping, either some basic piggyback device like an Apexi Safc, or a replacement Ecu, and it really needs the Maf sensor swapping for a unit from the Z32 300zx turbo, which will also need some mapping changes, as the standard one is at its limit around that power level. Should be scary quick in a lightweight kitcar, as my old 200sx really went with 300bhp, and they are 1250kg

blakep82 - 11/10/09 at 10:31 PM

makes me moist

Davey D - 12/10/09 at 06:15 AM

Ooh just noticed its got the winged sump on it.

It doesnt say SR20 on the front of it, which normally means it is a cheaper copy. Does it say Greddy on the underside? if not then it is definately one of the copies. Just keep your eye on it that it doesnt start to go porous, and leak

All done! running apexi fc with commander and z32 maf and avcr and other bits thats why i bought this one, going to run it till the turbo goes bye bye and then get a bigger one

i prob going to have to replace the sump for a standard one as i think its going to be too wide

turbodisplay - 12/10/09 at 08:00 AM

I would think long an hard before usng a solid clutch.
With a lightweight car the chances of trans damage is small, but it could be very harsh making the car horrible to drive.

Agreed, a friend of mine recently fitted a sprung paddle clutch in his civic and he's just ordered a Helix organic plate to fit. Even with the sprung centre it gives a horribly harsh engagement, especially doing fast changes.

For road I'd use an organic plate every time unless there's no possible way it can handle the power.

Nash - 12/10/09 at 06:00 PM

That really is a Tim Tooltime Taylor ooohhhrrr!!!

Is it a trick of the picture angle or is that a really tall engine?

Did you pay big money (ballpark if you don't mind me asking)?

Regards..........Neil

Stuart_B - 12/10/09 at 06:33 PM

wow, that makes my engine swap look pointless.lol

any way as said i would love to see rough ballpark figuers and prices.

hope to flow this swap as well

stuart

tomgregory2000 - 12/10/09 at 07:11 PM

it is a tall engine, its 3-4 cm taller than the xe im removing but should clear my bonnet,
got to love the room in the vientos

the engine and box and apexi power fc ecu and apexi boost controler and 255L fuel pump and goodridge braided lines and alloy bulkhead fittings other bits and pieces cost just over 2k which is cheap for 321bhp.

I hope to have it running and in the car for around 2.5 - 3k and by march.

The torque this engine puts out means that a paddle clutch is needed, i may change it for a spring one but it came with the engine so will use it and see what it is like.

tomgregory2000 - 12/10/09 at 09:03 PM

well i started to take bits off the engine to give it a good clean

Description
Description

as you can see the oil filter position is not the best in the world as it drips oil down the engine each time you replace it and gets covered in crap

Description
Description

ive done a bit of cleaning on the front and its coming up rather well

the exhaust side is not so bad, just a bit of road grime

Description
Description

turbodisplay - 16/10/09 at 08:07 AM

You think that oil filter posistion is bad, a rev1 or 2 3sge/ 3sgte has the filter upside down!

Darren

Werner Van Loock - 16/10/09 at 06:59 PM

Will be some serious power, but the last SR20DET powered kitcar I've seen ended up like this:

Jasper's burned Stylus
Jasper's burned Stylus

So make sure you get everything right, turbo's tend to get very hot you know. (though the turbo was not the cause, fire started other side of the engine)

tomgregory2000 - 21/10/09 at 02:57 PM

Here are a few update pics.

Got to love an alloy engine, they clean up rather well.

flak monkey - 21/10/09 at 03:18 PM

Looking good, in a similar position to mine at the moment

Certainly do have to love an all ally engine!

In response to a question you asked the other day, I plan on running 13" rims all round eventually with 195 tyres on the front and 235 on the back. So 6" fronts rims and 7" rears. But thats another upgrade when money allows.

Looks like you've cleaned up the engine bay already by removing that antique from it

FlansS14 - 25/10/09 at 08:25 PM

by far the best engine choice

Ive been running mine with basic mods and a H-dev stage one chip and its allot of fun! I thing ill up it to stage 2 over the winter.

thought you might like these pics. i moved some of the diaganal bars arround to clear the manifolds, i also made my tunnel wider but mines a Luego Velocity chassis.

ive got loads of others if you need them.

oh and PM me a price on the XE setup. A fried of mine is after one

Keep up the good work

Flan

tomgregory2000 - 25/10/09 at 08:39 PM

WOW thats a tight fit

im glad ive got the viento

just offered up the gearbox over the weekend, its a big bugger and have had to cut a couple bits out of the trans tunnel.

Will get some pics up soon

FlansS14 - 30/10/09 at 01:14 PM

You've got loads of room compared to my tiny bay... should be fine

on and cleaning Aluminuim... Cilit bang for the win!!

tomgregory2000 - 5/11/09 at 06:08 PM

just a little update.

Here is the problem i had with the gearbox

Description
Description

The two nuts that stick out on either side of the gearbox were hitting on the uprights on the trans tunnel and the only job they do is to hold a spring to center the gearlever

Here is the trans tunnel with a little bit of modification

Description
Description

and with the begining of the inserts

tomgregory2000 - 9/11/09 at 05:38 PM

Well today was the first try of the engine in the engine bay and it fitted!!! (almost)

It looks as though i will be able to keep the sump above the bottom chassis rail and have just enough room under the bonnet

Here are a few pics for you lot

Description
Description

Description
Description

I am going to have to move this rail as the exhaust manifold just rubs on it

Description
Description

And i think my engine mounts need beefing up a little

Description
Description

tomgregory2000 - 12/12/09 at 09:09 PM

Just thought i would post a little update

Here are the new engine mounts

Description
Description

Description
Description

I came across a slight problem with the turbo manifold

Description
Description

But no more problems

Description
Description

Just got to glue the tube back in place a little bit further out.

Ive started work on the intercooler and rad brackets, they are getting there but need a bit of finishing off(the intercooler needs to drop down about 5mm) and alot of metal removed as it weighs a ton but here are a few pics

Description
Description

Description
Description

Description
Description

And all being well and dry tomorrow im going to have the engine all bolted in

flak monkey - 12/12/09 at 09:46 PM

Looking good Nice job!

What intercooler is that BTW?

tomgregory2000 - 12/12/09 at 10:10 PM

The intercooler is from Jasper
But it is from a nissan pulsar gtir? the one that fits on top of the engine.

One of these Cli ck me

As you can see the inlet and out are on opp sides so what you have to do is cut one of the end tanks off and flip it over, ive had the hose tales modded a bit to give me a bit more room in the nose cone, oh and they are cheap to buy because no one wants them.

Tommy

tomgregory2000 - 13/12/09 at 04:22 PM

Well today was a good day, it stayed dry(ish) and i managed to get the engine and gearbox bolted in

The engine looks sooooo small in the bay

Description
Description

And a pic of it fitted on the engine mounts

Description
Description

And i think its sitting far enough back

Description
Description

flak monkey - 13/12/09 at 05:07 PM

Well you couldnt get it much further back!

Jealous of how quickly yours is moving on, looking very smart

carpmart - 13/12/09 at 05:28 PM

I too am impressed with the progress - keep up the good work!

tomgregory2000 - 13/12/09 at 07:13 PM

It has been going well, ive had quite a bit of holiday saved up so am taking it at the mo which is good.

Also its a bit easier taking an engine and box from a car that is allready rear wheel drive, that cuts out all the hastle of sorting out clutches and flywheels etc...

Also i want it on the road by my birthday, middle of march so have to pull my finger out and get on with it.

tomgregory2000 - 17/12/09 at 09:19 PM

Another little update

Description
Description

Description
Description

And here are the start of the brackets for the rad and intercooler, need to remove as much weight as possible from the brackets but keep the strength

Description
Description

And a boaring pic of my new prop
I would reccomend dunning and fairbank foranybody who wants a new prop, just ask for peter, the most helpfull chap in the world!!!

Description
Description

franky - 17/12/09 at 09:26 PM

making good progress. the sr20det must be one of the best lumps to use, RWD out the box too.

stevegough - 18/12/09 at 07:49 PM

looks fantastic - but all that power - don't bother with rear tyres, just get some high - performance TRACKS

twinturbo - 19/12/09 at 07:50 AM

Nice install..

you'd be supprised, with a good suspension setup and good tyres (r888 Are good) I have no trouble with my 260bhp
