I have been trying to sort a Locoblade (1994 Fireblade motor).
One of the clutch spring retaining bolts had snapped and the other 4 were all elongated just under the washer.

What is likely to have caused this?
a) Overtightening the bolts
b) Overtravel of the clutch arm
c) Springs too short (Springs appear to be about 4.5mm under minimum size).

I would guess a).

You need to torque them up correctly??

I have had an issue with this on some less critical parts, turns out that if you get wax/oil on bolt threads the torque needed can be much less upto 50% less..

Probably not much help!

I refitted my clutch earlier this week, i was more worried about the thread in the aluminium basket stripping before snapping a bolt. I'd honestly expect the thread to strip before the bolt head snapping! My guess is it was the constant pressure of the springs and the heat cycles. I assume the broken head didn't enter somewhere nasty and destroy the engine??

The springs do compress over time, so you need to replace them if they are short, and you may aswell put uprated ones in then
