Pinto running problems - advice please
peterparsons - 23/6/09 at 03:00 PM

My 2ltr Pinto won't tick over without the choke about 1/3 open.
It revs fine, timming is ok.
It has always had an inline filter fitted. which I have replaced.
As soon as I push the choke in it stalls.

Any ideas ?

First thing I would check for is an air leak on the inlet side.

If you have to pull the choke out (enrichen the mixture) it probably means that the mixture is unusually weak for some reason - i.e. an air leak

Spray some wd40 around the inlet manifold gasket and carb gasket and see if the running changes. If it does then an air leak.

What carb have you got? Does it have an idle jet?

Yea, air leak or idle jet was my thoughts

Carb as below but alot cleaner... Rescued attachment Carb_edited 1.JPG

Is the servo vacuum take off (bottom right in your pic ) properly blanked off ?

Is there power getting to the anti run on valve and have you verified it's working (not stuck open)?

Yes the servo Vacuum take off is plugged.

Anti Run on valve ????? where's that ?

As suggested an air leak would be the first thing to check , followed by cleaning the idle jet . Little tip which sometimes works is to rev the engine to about 3000 rpm , keep the throttle open and cover the inlet to the carb until the revs drop, uncover the carb while keeping the throttle open . As said it doesn't always work but could mean the difference between stripping the carb and not stripping it.

Just a thought have you checked the tappets as tight valve will cause an engine to stall?
