Bike carbs and zetecs.
Danozeman - 9/2/09 at 04:42 PM

As most of you know i have trouble with my car running like a pig.

Now, i have just been to frost motorsport to see what he can do for me. He reckons that half my trouble is the air filter is outside of the car thus sucking in too much of too cold air. He reckons i should sort this out before i take it to him? Have most people with bike carbs got the filter inside?
Im very limited for space under the bonnet.
The BEC boys have there filters outside??

Mine are outside, I thought cold air was better.

Haven't had mine setup or anything but it seems to be ok, it pulls well enough through the range.

Was he suggesting the carbs are icing?

cheers

i can't see the picture, but im running R1 TB's on my pinto and the filter is under the bonnet, what about a plenum and an air filter in the nose cone?

Danozeman - 9/2/09 at 04:56 PM

Yeah but also the air being way to cold making it choke up.

I've had mine outside for over a year and no problems. 1800 zetec ,fireblade carbs and megajolt.

Cold air is more dense, in their natural habitat bike carbs draw cold air via ducts in the front of the fairing, car should run better the way you have the filters.

Think turbo installations and intercoolers to cool the incomming charge.

Well thats what i thought cold air is better. Think ill leave them and play with the jets more.

i would pipe up the water feed but the pipes are too small so would be arkward to do.

Sounds to me like he's stumped for an answer to the problem.

Heres mine on the rollers at BB. No filter, plenum or anything but no hole in the bonnet either. Was ok going in with a plenum and filter on but even better going home without. Rescued attachment Bogg Brothers.jpg

Normal symptoms of carbs icing up is the engine will lose power , you will perhaps pull over to the side of the road to investigate and find no problem, get back in and power is back to normal for a few miles. Happened to me on the way to SVA , carb was through bonnet but covered by a scoop.

Mine are completely under the bonnet with a pipercross filter.

I've also had a different set of ZX6 carbs running with an airbox, and other than being a bit quieter I couldn't really tell the difference.

If you were a bit closer you could give my spare ZX6R carbs a try and rule in/out a carb problem.

I don't wish to sound like a gob-sh1t but bike carbs should certainly need re-jetting and balancing to cope with the increased demand for fuel and air. Incorrect air adjustments will do just that. Other potential issues might be firing. Just for peace of mind spray your HT leads with WD40 and try it from there. It is common to misfire with buggered ht leads with no visual signs. WD will sort as a short time solution. I guess plug gaps/colour is ok? Might show signs of carb issues. Lastly check you have a PROPER earth. This will aslo leed to misfire. Good luck.
