V8 emissions
AdamR - 5/11/08 at 11:30 AM

It's looking less and less likely that I'm going to be able to prove the age of my engine as pre '95. So I'm wondering how difficult would it be to get a 3.9 RV8 through the full SVA/IVA emissions tests...

Are a couple of aftermarket cats going to do the job?

you could convert to LPG

this lot do conversion kits suitable for that engine

linky

off course it would quite quickly pay for itself on fuel costs and you get cheaper road tax

Hmmm, I was considering going the LPG route anyway. The engine I've got has spent much of it's life on LPG and it's clean as a whistle inside.

So there are different emissions regs for LPG? Or are you saying that LPG is less, um, emissive than petrol and thus will help get through the test?

What fuel delivery system are you using ?

Carbs , Flapper injection or Hotwire injection ?

Hi Snuggs, yes I have the engine number. It's a 36D prefix, which is a factory 3.9 V8 auto produced at somepoint from '88 onwards according to this.

I can U2U you the full engine number if you have access to any inside information?

Good question. Either flapper or hotwire initially (I currently have the bits for a flapper setup, but I'm on the lookout for a hotwire). At some point post-SVA I'll probably go megasquirt.

some of the later hotwire systems have lamba cicutry in them .

The million dolar question is 'can the Hotwire with the lamba' get a v8 to within the post 95 SVA limits.

I think you need to find an indipendant tvr or landrover garage and see what they would expect emisions wise from your set-up.

this might help ( sorry about the size !!! )

Flapper WD 1988
Flapper WD 1988

Try an Email to the Land Rover heritage section of Land Rover.

Or The Gaydon Motor museum, they hold ALL Land Rovers production records.

As its a Range Rover Engine, either of them should be able to tell you almost the exact day!.
They will tell you the info, but a certificate costs about £15.

If you get really stuck, drop me a PM.

Thanks Geoff.

I've tried British Motor Heritage at Gaydon and they can;t help as they only have records up to '89.

Just found out about a chap in the tracability dept at Land Rover who may be able to help. Fingers crossed.
