OT... Help / Recommendation wanted to choose a "second" Camera

Hi all,

I have a DSLR but it's not always convenient to take it round everywhere.

I'd really like a compact digital camera to take with me on my honeymoon so that I don't have to take the DSLR on a night out etc.

I'd love something that could fit in a pocket, but know that I may be stretching it there!

I don't need it to have a huge megapixel contact - these snaps will doubtfully ever be blown up much past a standard photo size.

Cost is a big issue, I'd like it to be as cheap as possible, but without sacrificing too much in quality. What I mean is, it won't be used that often so lifespan isn't the biggest concern, but like most people, I don't want to buy a piece of tatt.

A friend of mine uses Ebuyer very often so I've just had a look on there, but didn't find it very inspirational! I can pretty easily borrow a camera for the trip, but I don't like borrowing stuff if I can get something in my price range...

Thanks in advance!

Steve

I am not a mind reader but what is your price range?

What is acceptable megpaixel count?

What is accpetable size?

Do you want zoom? If so, how much?

Look at the canons/sony - they are quite small but smallness does not equate to cheapness.

Also consider the memory card format - I would recommend you choose second camera that uses same as your main one (& phone.)

Also consider batteries - AA you can always buy in shops but Lion are u/s if you forgot to take the charger or have nowhere to plug it in. Disadvantage of cameras taking disposable calls is they tend to be a bit larger.

Take a trip to curry/comet/dixons/jessops and look - there is a poo load of cameras out there so you are bound to be something close to what you want.

I was going to add that I would want it to be standard SD card...

As I said, it would be nice if it could fit in my pocket...

As I said, it would be nice to be good enough megapixel to be normal photo size and quality, but nothing will ever go bigger than A4!

I'd like it to be up to £50, unless I can get a deal on ebay for a similar spec, but (ebay) cheaper camera...

Steve

Sorry I can't remember but its red with a big screen on the back.. it cost £100 at Bristol Airport.

Absolutely no help I'll agree but I don't think you can buy a poor snapshot anyway.

I ditched my SLR in favour of a Canon A710IS and it's now the only one I use.
Best price on Amazon c.£140 and it really does do everything I want it to.
Trouble is that if you buy cheap you get cheap and I doubt you'll ever be really satisfied with the quality of a cheap digital compared to a higher spec. one - nowt wrong with cheap ones for holiday snaps though if that's all you're after.
Cheers, Pewe

Thats the trouble Pewe!
I have the DSLR one for when I want to take a photo of something important or when I go to Oulton for some motorsport shots, but for slinging one in the pocket for a honeymoon, then a cheap one will be fine.

Trouble is, it's hard (if you don't know much about cameras!) to know whether a camera is cheap because it's toss, or whether it's cheap because it's not current/this years model/shiny/multifunction etc etc...

I'd go for any Cannon IXUS.. all the ones i've had have been brilliant.

Or if its only to carry arround for the oppertunist shot how's about a good camera fone?
The last 2 Sony Erricson's i've had with the Cybershot cameras on (K750 and K850) take really good photos with a proper flash aswell.

Just got the missus a C902 - 5.0MP and works reasonably well....even has a lense cover (had a K800i couple of years ago and she loved that, too)

Thing about camera phones is the lack of zoom and sometimes low light issues (photos tend to come out with a bluish tint)

However, the cybershot series are pretty good...

Steve, take it from someone who has been married for more years than I care to think about - don't whatever you do admit to buying a cheap camera to take on honeymoon - it may not be immediate but years later that you'll lose brownie points for buying a cheap one - the female mind works in mysterious and unfathomable ways!
Cheers, Pewe

Although I'd tend to agree with you - it simply isn't the case with my wife to be!

Milenah really isn't like that!

Here's a pic of her that I took when I nipped to Oulton to photograph my car for it's sales advert while she was waiting patiently yet again for me to do stuff with cars!!!
