alloy rampipe trumpets

in what applications are rampipes necessary? are they just used for car throttle bodies or can you use them for Motorbike TB's as well like the R1's and GSXR's. What benefits and advantages do they have?

Rampipes/trumpets are not necessary on throttle bodies - they are essential !
They increase the airflow into the throttle body , and the length can be used to tune the engine characteristics .

they give the air flowing in a more gradual path into the carb than the normal inlet allowing more air to enter (there is a stagnant area at the lip on a normal carb which reduces the effective opening) and apparently long ones give you more torque, plus they look cool

ok so, im guessing that im going to have to open my wallet again, since i dont have any trumpets.

but, how do i know which ones to buy? the bigger the better? im running R1 TB's on 2.1 pinto, recommendations and ideas would be helpful as my knowledge in this field is basic at most!

imguessing that number 9 on claires diagram would be a good place to start?

where do i get them from as well?

cheers

Oi, that's my pic that is! Even got my oily thumb print on it too!
Well, I scanned it in anyways. Although it is worth having a copy of, as it shows just how effective or otherwise they can be.
The length of the pipe can be used to alter the length on the inlet and as such alter the power curve of the engine. The ideal length is often quite long. IIRC, for a mini it was something in the region of 28" for one application! Best bet is to have a word with some one who tunes Pinto's. They may even have something knocking about that you could use or adapt.

Otherwise, anything with a rolled edge on it will be a step in the right direction.

Yup. I so need some little trumpets in my airbox. Even a small trumpet would make a huge difference.....

Last and this years R1 has variable length trumpets, they change as the load on the engine changes, would look cool stuck out of the bonnet.........

Sorry , I forgot where I'd `borrowed` that from
I allready understood how much effect the shape has on flow , but that diagram makes it very clear .
I might just try number 11 on my next set of `bodies , since space is very tight and torque is not a problem

Quite alright. I put it up before so people could understand what benefit the various shapes have. K&N sell a set of the little stub stacks for SU's. Although knowing what you're like, you'll probably just knock a set up in CF or something else shiny!

That an offer? I've got to actually buy a car for the engine to go in before I start tuning it! Although a set of 6 ITBs with CF ram pipes would look very, very .

Yup, something like that, but sat on the much prettier Alfa V6!
What size is your engine, the Mazda V6 came in about a million sizes didn't it?

It's a 1.8 , and I'm amazed just how quick it is - it does an easy 120 (in fourth gear ! )
But I'm sure the airbox could be improved .....

I'm beginning to think I might be over doing thinks with my engine, given that it's a 2.5! And geared for 155!!
Anyway, sorry Alex, we appear to have gone off at a bit of a tangent!

it sounds like you to should get married, with your V6 who har,

my question was where can i get trumpets from to fit my R1 bodies? CF ones would be sweet! im having a bit of a CF obsession at the moment ive just ordered this from carbon mods!

Another way to do it is to use standard straight Aluminium tube with a K&N filter on the end, where the base of the filter already includes the bellmouth - see http://www.knfilters.com/search/product.aspx?Prod=RD-0460

Number 11 is/was a K&N stub stack - that picture is from Tuning the A series by Vizard IIRC.

Something like
