Which distributor do you have? Bosch units will have a small line scribed into the rim which should align with number one HT lead

in the distributor body, there should be a notch cut in the top face (it might be under the white plastic guard thing) that marks number one cylinder when the engine's at tdc.

set the crank to tdc on the timimg pulley and with the distributor clamp slackened, set the rotor arm to point at the mark in the casing. stick the cap back on and from there, clockwise round the cap, the plug leads go 1,3,4,2

start it and set it up with a timing light

Firing order is 1-3-4-2. No1 plug is at the front of the engine. If no one has molested the timing it is like this.

yours, Pete

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.
