don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Looks like a grass snake from here too.
My fox terrier used to be good at finding them bless her. They give off a smell like garlic when they are harassed.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Adders have a diamond pattern down their back, IIRC.

Definately not an Adder (no diamonds on the back).
So apart from a Slowworm (sp?) which is silver that only leaves a Grass snake doesn't it?
Either that or it's escaped from the zoo!
Maybe it's the Ambridge Serpent!!!

Trivia time
A slow worm is not really a snake, it's a lizard still in the throes of evolution and can be recognised by the fact that it has eyelids.
Here's a a picture showing a grass snake, just like yours
and here's an adder

Grass snakes can bite, but very rarely do and of course they aren't venomous.
Adder bites can be quite nasty, but are virtualy never fatal if treated.
