J29 M1 can't be too far from Halifax?
In which case this may be an idea.
http://cgi1.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4645257633
Especially given the cost of a head.

At that price I'm tempted for a "just in case" spare if Jon doesn't want it .

Whip head of first before you decide, I've seen them with a melted piston before. rear head bolts are a bit of a barsteward to get on.
Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.

If this can be done to an old Ferrari head, why not a cracked Disco head?

Economics Tigging and machining would likely be more than a whole Disco engine off ebay. Old Ferrari heads are manufactured from unobtainium

look down one side of the gasket, and there is a tab with 1, 2, or three little holes. Get the same gasket, as there are three or four thicknesses.
They will want to know how many holes in yours.
You can see this tab with the head on.
Its a straightforward job, heavy but easy. I lift my head off with an engine crane specially if you dont take the manifolds off.
Stand on a box, about 1ft high, as it lessens the strain on the calf muscles. when you lean into the engine bay..
Take the bonnet off,or strap it up with a bungee strap.
Usually head gaskets go between 3 or 4 pot and the pushrod hole, or straight out the back of no 4 pot in line with the crank.
Its very common. You dont say if its a 200 or 300 Tdi.
Have fun
