Early failures in aero wing design.

WTF were they playing at?
Did they really believe it was an aerodynamic enhancement, or was there a more sinister objective?
There appears to be some form of wheelie bar hanging out the back. Was this wing intended to increase rear down force for maximum traction (and drag ), or does the photo just confirm what we already knew about Germans?
It's obviously not a novelty car like the Santa Pod Wheel Standing Corvette, as that would involve a sense of humor, and Germans are devoid of the jocular gene. Rescued attachment wing_mania.jpg
