You don't need to have a cat in your avatar, but it is better. Ideally the cat shouldbe one of your own, but a picture of someone
else's cat is better than none

I'll have you know that that was a properly made cat harness and lead!
The cat in the current avatar is Squeaky, one of the cats we fostered for the Cats Protection. He was quite amenable to being taken for a walk around
the garden, but had to go on a lead because we couldn't risk him running off.
