hi all ive been thinking about getting a cheap toy for track days (and i mean cheap) have being looking at the bay and some good golf gtis 16v mk2 and astra gsis but never being on a track day before would i just be made to look stupid in something like this (are they to slow) cant really afford to start upgrading the engine and fund the kit car. also how much are track days normaly if i do get one the car will be totaly stripped of any thing not needed and be for track only what other cars would you sugest cheers adam
I have a Golf VR6 which is blindingly fast above 3000rpm and although it's not been on a track i think it would go very well on one. 174bhp as
std.
Thumbs Up
Ive been thinking the same but it must have four seats and still be able to use it as a spare car when needed.
I was thinking 325i e36
Take your pic really, the Escort Bonus in FastFord goes well as does the roller in PPC. Depends what you want out of it and how much you want to
spend.
How about a basic track BEC locost? No road items, very light, huge PTW
Neither of those would embarass you on a track day. It's more about you getting to drive what you have close to the limit in relative safety.
It's not a race and undoubedly there will always be someone quicker than you what ever you choose.
Other things to consider would be a Pug 205 or 306 GTI, Citroen Saxo, Seat Ibiza GTI, 16v Clio etc, etc...!

it really depends on budget. what is your budget?do you want FWD or RWD?
i was going to go along the track only route but decided on the locoblade instead.
FWD id go for a 205 GTI, if you could, find one with a fully running MI16 conversion, but any model is cracking fun.
RWD, probably something like an early Mx5/eunos roadster.
Neither are blindingly quick but driven well will be great fun and very entertaining.
my 2p
edit to say i just seen your budget of a few hundred, i would say look for a 205GTI in that case!
track days CAN be expensive but last year i did my first 1/2 day, literally half the price and about 3-4hrs open pit lane which is MORE than enough
for one day trust me!

A trackday is gonna cost you about £150. Even if you bought a reasonable track car for £100, you can Build your own sportscar for as little as £250
and race it!
I'm sure I've heard that somewhere before............................

haha yeah i heard that too dont believe it though
dead sierra - 7/10/08 at 08:22 PMI've taken my fiesta zetec-s on track a couple of times, it only has 110 brake so there is always someone faster, but as soon as you leave the pit lane you have so much fun that you just dont care about being slower!
andrews_45 - 7/10/08 at 08:22 PMI am a bit of a trackday whore and have had several different cars that have doubled as my daily drive and track toy. Had an Impreza (2002) and was too scared to break it. Had a 205GTI (1987) was very badly built, but boy did it handle!!! Felt fast as it was tiny and tinny, was far too unreliable and sold it to a mate who is busy restoring it. But without a shadow of doubt my vote would be a BMW E36 Coupe, I bought one in August, it has intergalactic milage but feels and drives like a new car (put new suspension and bushes on it). Plus 200BHP 6 Cylinder growl, right wheel drive and full leather interior. You can pick them up off ebay for 1k now and I'd rather have one of them with 100k on the clock than a Pug...
Plus I still have the Locost...
PS watch out with E36 coupe some cars (95-97 328i's) were fitted with Nikasil liners, which went porus, dead easy to spot one though, so dont let that put you off. Plus they do a realistic 30mpg
nitram38 - 7/10/08 at 08:38 PMHow about THIS?
ETDWM
NigeEss - 7/10/08 at 09:23 PMMk1 MR2
Just done a day at Aintree last Saturday. HUUge fun and the car only cost £600
bimbleuk - 8/10/08 at 07:45 AMBuy something like a Cavalier SRi and bung some cheap suspension on it. Good enough for some fun on track.
I bought a mk1 Mondeo 4x4 for £50 intending to kill it on track. Turned out to be such a good car I sold it on ebay for over £400 which was a pity.
