Paul TigerB6 - 29/5/08 at 12:29 PM

Well i am now a certified plonker!!!

Managed to drop an 8ft concrete fence post onto my fingers last night (only from a few inches though) and now have an open fracture at the end of my ring finger!!! So thats 6 weeks to heal properly according to the hospital - car building wont be so easy now but i'm sure i'll be trying my best later on!!

The England match looked rubbish anyway from what i saw of it!!!

Oh i took a pic too!! LOL

I did a similar thing a few years back but tried catching a coping stone which resulted in the "traumatic amputation" of the tip of my middle finger. Fortunately I didn't lose that much but the bone did need trimming a little to allow an "advancement flap" procedure. I can give all the details if you want - The procedure was done under a local so I got to see the lot. I had 28 stiches in one finger tip, some of which were through the nail.
It's only when you damage a finger that you realise how sensitive (and important!!) they are (and yes I do wear gloves for DIY etc a lot more now).

Did I tell you about the time that I got 50% caustic soda solution in my eye... ?

Mr Whippy - 29/5/08 at 01:23 PM

stitched your nail together? why bother it just grows back...

no but do tell...

When I was at primary school a kid dropped (deliberately) a concrete block on my foot and basically crushed the bone in my toes as I was wearing plimsolls. If I came across him today I'd probably beat the crap out him, even though I was about 7 I still remember it well.

Here ya go. Quite dissapointed with that picture now i downloaded it to my lappy!! Nowhere near as impressive as Richards either by the sounds of it but here's my war wound.

PS yes i was wearing thick riggers gloves

Mr Whippy - 29/5/08 at 01:27 PM

yip that nail looks a tad flat, oh well you'd be suprised how well that will heal. I think I'd have that dipped in a glass of ice water otherwise it might swell and bruse.

Nasty. My thumb (and wrist) is currently in plaster after a slight mishap with an angle grinder. I've been told 10 days and the plaster can be removed, probably to be replaced by a splint. then another 6 - 8 weeks for the tendon to heal.

Car building stopped for a while but I've made some nice flat GRP panels today. I'm limited to what I can do 1 handed or steadied with the fingers of the other hand.

Ouch - now that sounds nasty!! So come on then, lets have some war wound pics on the thread so we can compare!! lol

Mr Whippy - 29/5/08 at 02:05 PM

I've never been really injured working on cars, I usually work too slowly for things like that to happen

looks like a good case for drilling a hole in the back of your nail there get all that nasty blood out from behind it, it only hurts for a second and will feel much better after, mine was 2 fingers squashed in the undercarridge on a nimrod

This is how mine turned out after a similar incident. was moving a rather heavy fly press.

rusty nuts - 29/5/08 at 06:49 PM

Few years ago I was in spain on a skydiving holiday and the Red Devils turned up. The group I was with challenged them to a go kart race but one of the RDs caught his finger tip in the drive chain. We all ended up walking round the track looking for his finger tip. When asked if it hurt he said of course not he was a Red Devil to which my reply was if he was a real man he would have finished the race. I'm still in hiding.

Simon - 29/5/08 at 07:11 PM

My (youngest) brother was walking backwards with a lawn mower (26 years ago) and tripped on a trailer (long grass etc etc). Net result, he starts falling backwards, tries to balance, lifts lawnmower, and up goes foot!

Very very very luck he only lost one toe (next to big).

Worst bit, he was due to go with me and school sailing on the med, then canoeing on the Ardeche for a fortnight.

I've been lucky and only got the usual hammer, grinder and bow saw scars (well, the hammer scars are more mental than physical - like upending a club hammer to resit head, bash it on surface only for head to slide so far down it caught the skin between index finger and thumb)

Thought I'd better add, hope you're better soon, Paul.

i hope my mate doesn't read this
we were stacking concrete blocks one day
he put some on a pile but dropped to the floor like a sack of spuds
the stack was at waist height so you can guess what was caught
ended up having it sewn up
oooooooooooooooooohhh PAIN

That looks slightly painful - I want to put a smiley on, but it'll then look like I'm not being sympathetic, which I am.

A few years ago, I was taking a rough-cut along a length of 2" tube in a big lathe. As I flicked the swarf off the toolpost, my rolled-up sleeve slid down my arm, over my hand and caught the work piece. My sleeve wrapped around the tube and dragged me into the lathe. As I fell, my head twonked the tail stock and as my arm twisted around the tube, the tube started to slip in the chuck. Until the curls of swarf from the chuck jaws gripped and it started to pull me in again. This started to stall the motor, until the starter gear clicked back in and set it off again........
I still have the scars where the friction took the skin off the back of my hand, fore arm and neck. Thankfully, I didn't break any bones but I did learn to respect the lathe a lot more!!!

Wadders - 31/5/08 at 02:08 PM

Well this is how they looked this morning
not good! decided a trip to A&E was inevitable

Place was packed with a 2-3 hr wait
But the nice lady had me in and out in 30mins

Turns out they're both open fractures
she drilled a couple of small holes to let the blood out, so they feel much better.

Got a rollocking for not going yesterday.
It seems fingers are very prone to infection
and you should get them seen to asap.

Ouch!! Guess I was lucky that my open fracture came out on the fingertip and not under the nail so i didnt have to have my nail drilled at all.

Anyway, you're a locoster - havent you got a pillar drill at all??

Wadders - 31/5/08 at 04:20 PM

Yes, but i'm a big wussie

She did it with a big hollow needle from a syringe, and its actually painless.

I'm sorry but all these are "ladies injuries"

I lost my spleen when the locost fell off the axle stands and squashed me.

I win.

and in second place.....

I broke my leg when the back wall of a concrete sectional garage I was dismantling (to build my Locost in) fell on top of me.

Losing the end of my thumb to Mr Angle grinder was nothing.

So basically, lose an organ and we'll talk.........

cheers

Chris

Well............ whilst welding some hastily constructed brackets to my Atlas axle to take part in the PPC£999 Challenge, I set fire to myself and burned to death.........

Excellent - well we need pictures of your chargrilled corpse to verify you are indeed the most injured locoster!! ChrisG is looking pretty invincible at the moment when it comes to taking the crown of biggest plonker (oops i mean most injured person) on the froum!!

Many years ago I was trying to roll a scrap car from it's side back onto it's wheels. I was holding it by the top of the wing and pulling it towards me. As it toppled over I jumped back and it crashed down missing me as planned. Unfortunately the open bonnet also smacked down onto one of my fingers and it looked a lot like that.

After 3 days of no sleep and much throbbing agony I gave in and went to casualty where they made a hole to relieve the pressure. However, they used a paperclip heated red hot in a spirit burner and pushed it hard into the nail. Needed a big male nurse to clamp my arm down to the table

Thanks for all your sympathy !

JoelP - 2/6/08 at 08:37 PM

nasty stuff guys. I must be lucky, i use tools all day at work and have never done anything worse than minor cuts. *tempts fate*

Wadders - 2/6/08 at 09:54 PM

I'm thinking maybe it works on a sliding scale.
The longer you leave it before going to A&E, the worse the punishment is .

I wouldn't want to cast aspersions mate or doubt your word, but that's difficult to believe, to be honest.

Can't put my finger on it, (several of the posters in this thread can't do that either) but there's something that doesn't ring true.

I know what it is!!!

You bolted them brackets on!!

Cheers
