Hi all, I am toying with the idea of buying an old porsche 944 ( 1985 model £2K ) as my daily tintop drive.
Has anybody got any experience of them being used as a daily drive ?
Are they liveable with ?
Is this a good idea ?

The car i have found has 113000 miles on it and is apparently immaculate, mostly porsche service history, full leather, oval dash model.

Views, opinions and experiences welcomed.

Our kid used to have one and use it most days, he loved it. Only bother he used to get was idiots trying to race.

Well I lived with my Elise for two years as a daily driver and it was fine, wet, dry, snow, rain, fine as long as you are not stupid with it.

I assume a Porsche would be no different.

I've no personal experience of them, but a guy I used to work with raced Proches, and was pretty into them. The thing to watch out for on the 2.5 944s are the balancer arrangements, to fit 2.5 litres into a 4-pot engine they came up with a system of weights and pulleys to make it run more smoothly. These are quite pricey to service, and they do need to have been done.

Apart from that, I don't know of anything else, but I'm not an expert.

As above regarding the balance belts. Also its an intereference engine....

Ballancer belt is like a double sided cambelt a bit tricky to get the tension right as it is very flexible.Water pump is also driven off one of the belts cant remember which.
My brothers one also suffered with intermitant hydrolic lifter ticking noise, Put that down to wee wee thin Mobil 1. and high mileage.

I have a 1981 924 turbo and although i don't normally use it for my daily driver I have done so for a couple of weeks at a time on a few occasions in the past.
Yes it's basically fine for the job, I'm not sure about the 944 but the 924 doesn't have power steering, has a heavy clutch and a low driving position compared to modern cars, but those weren't big issues to me.
As long as you can do the majority of servicing yourself (I don't like to pay Porsche Specialist prices!) it should be fine as an everyday driver.

In my time, I've owned a couple of 944s, one n/a car and the other a 250bhp turbo. They are both extremely capable, sure footed in all conditions, beautifully balanced and I rate them as a pair of the best cars I have ever owned. Certainly very very practical for everyday motoring.

I've had a couple, the only conditions I wouldn't recommend them for is on ice/snow, as rear wheel drive, with wide tyres, they lose traction in those circumstances easily.
I've had a couple of hairy drives downhill, on packed snow, where lifting off the throttle was enough to break traction (due to the high engine braking).
Other than that, they are superb in all departments

not driven mine as dailey driver but have 924s 2.5 which i use for hooning around .they handle well and make a great winter track car with handling siniliar to a 7 type car.car cost me £169 a year on classic with 7000mile

I ran a 10 year old 928 for a year, Porches are so well made you should not have any issues.
