Can anyone identify this vehicle?
jimmyjoebob - 22/7/07 at 12:02 PM

I went to the War and Peace show at Paddock wood yesterday and saw this vehicle there - I couldn't find anybody to ask what it was. Any ideas?

Beetle based?

RAC has it down as a 1600cc, made in '92?

I should have gone to specsavers!!

It looked like a vw engine but it has four wheel drive. Two others were parked up elsewhere but with no owners nearby! This one was the only right hand drive and also the only non Q plate.

The suspension looked well designed and built. I was hoping to see them going around the arena but there was so much else to see, it never happened.

Confused but excited. - 22/7/07 at 01:38 PM

Looks like the type of vehicle that would be made for use by the Hereford Hooligans, on their little jaunts abroad.

VW did make a 4wd beetle based car with the 1600 engine in the very early days, could be a derivative of that?

I wonder how the "well secured" battery fairs in the EuroNCAP tests?

I can !!
Having just rebuilt the engine in another car which is at the show, LHD sandy camo one, I feel i ought to let you in.
it is called an LSV, light strike vehicle, and they were built by Ricardo Engineering in the late 80's - early 90's, They are largely VW based with a 1.9 or 2.1 watercooled flat 44 from the T25 transporter series, the rest of the vehcile is bespoke but beetle inspired, early versions as in the one i get to plat with have 'beam style' front suspension but with coil overs rather than funny torsion bars.
Hope that sorts that out.

Bah one away from being the first to id it as an LSV

Excellent work, sirs!

Would that design go through an sva today, or would temporary bodywork be required?

*chortle* SVA *smirk*
No I think it's fair to say that would never get through an SVA as is, though IIRC there are plenty of exceptions for military vehicles in the manual so I may be wrong.

You might be able to fashion a grp beach buggy style body that would cover the exterior problems.

Probably wouldn't pass SVA with a Milan mounted on it.

It looks somewhat like a "lite" version of the XR311 - see this link for more.
