Hypothetical 'what car would you buy for 10K'
Jasper - 9/6/06 at 12:52 PM

So, if you had 8-10k to spend on a car - what would you buy?

Criteria are: familyish car, though 3 door is ok, must have 2 proper back seats, reliable and well built without killer repair bills. Must have reasonable boot and access - hatchbacks are good. Enjoyable and rewarding to drive, but good on long distances. Must have 'style' ....

I'm sure you lot will have a few opinions.....

donut - 9/6/06 at 12:55 PM

Porsche 944
Audi A3
Some kind of Alfa
Focus sport
erm......

iank - 9/6/06 at 12:57 PM

Golf GTI for FWD
BMW for RWD (not sure if this is the Style you want mind)

Donut: How do you get Alfa from "reliable and well built without killer repair bills"

andyps - 9/6/06 at 01:01 PM

Fiat Coupe LE with low mileage

Howlor - 9/6/06 at 01:04 PM

Mezzz - 9/6/06 at 01:05 PM

Golf GTI (old)

Mini Cooper (S if you can find one)

A3

Yeah - cos I really want my daily drive as a £250 locost (if there really is such a thing....)

So far most things suggested were already on my list of possibles, expect the Focus Sport - nice idea, the Mini - hate it, my Mum has one, the worst plasticy dash I've ever seen in a car, and the Fiat Coupe - it's Italian and you know it's gonna be unrealiable....

Audi A3 Quattro is top of list so far.

If you don't mind something with a bit of mileage on it, then you could pick up an Audi RS4. Probably on a S or T plate. Nice 2.7 twin turbo.

OX - 9/6/06 at 02:41 PM

has to be a golf tdi or the a3

Hellfire - 9/6/06 at 02:49 PM

A3

B O B - 9/6/06 at 02:51 PM

Just get a 3 door focus with a duratec engine about a year old from a trade centre, then with the money you save out of the 10K you could go on a rally to Sardinia

Sorted

jos - 9/6/06 at 02:56 PM

Skyline

emsfactory - 9/6/06 at 03:07 PM

Rickman Ranger?

joneh - 9/6/06 at 03:10 PM

Anything from the VW group, even a Skoda if you can put up with the badge. A3 I reckon is the smartest buy.

shades - 9/6/06 at 03:19 PM

A8 4.2 quattro sport

Johnmor - 9/6/06 at 04:03 PM

Alfa 156 GTA

2001/ 2002

Currently all Alfa's are barred from my company vehicles list due to previous co. car owners experiencing total unreliability... nice looking, but that's where the success story ends...

DIY Si - 9/6/06 at 04:41 PM

The skoda fabia vrs is much better than most would expect. Used to have one until i put it through a crash barrier. Whilst that may not be the best advertisment, they are quite quick, handle well and good on fuel. Same 130 bhp engine as the vw/audis.

phelpsa - 9/6/06 at 05:29 PM

Subaru Impreza! You can have a 2 year old blob-eye WRX for that money. It'll last forever aswell!

DIY Si - 9/6/06 at 05:36 PM

I thought you had to be about 12 to own an impreza? Or have a really big dustbin strapped to the back?

All I have to say about that is it's german:

http://www.andywhittaker.com/Audi/blownup.htm

My suggestion would be MG ZS 180.

But then if I had 10k to spend, I'd buy a blower for my ZT260 and pocket the rest for future maintenance

Saab 95 Aero estate - speed, comfort and astonishing practicality, just the job for a road car

Lawnmower - 9/6/06 at 08:28 PM

2nd hand land rover, could pick up a mint 90 for that amount of cash!

JoelP - 9/6/06 at 10:28 PM

passat tdi, maybe the v6tdi if 10k gets one of those.

BKLOCO - 10/6/06 at 06:35 AM

Seat Leon or Toledo FR

I'm surprised how many times the A3 gets a mention on this thread.

I bought one last September and I'm well pleased with it.
(A3 2L TD Sport. 6 speed box)

My son and I have had a few V Dubs & Audi's over the years and the only one
I haven't been 100% happy with was my booted 1.6l Polo.
Everything on it was stamped Seat.
I found the build quality nowhere near their German counterparts.

Jasper - 10/6/06 at 12:44 PM

Thanks again chaps - would have a Saab - too 'old man - golf club' for me, Seat and Fiat to 'Southern European' on the build quality. Scooby - too bling, and I'd end up wanting to 'tune her up'.

So the A3 Quattro has it (love an A4 RS but don't want a high miler), but I now have to convince my old man that he wants my Espace (we have to keep it in the family as we need it for our business).... a hard job as he drives a 5 Series....

Mark Allanson - 10/6/06 at 07:44 PM

Don't be tempted by the 2.0 petrol lump, they use 1 litre of oil every 1000 miles.

That applies them all thruought the VAG range

richijenkin - 12/6/06 at 10:30 AM

golf tdi 150

Monkeybasher - 12/6/06 at 11:43 AM

Jaguar X type.

Gav - 12/6/06 at 12:08 PM

Seat Leon Cupra TDI would be my choice.
Been very impressed with the 1.8T Cupra just could do with better mileage

Jasper - 12/6/06 at 12:40 PM

Just looked at the reviews for the Cupra on What Car - and it comes out higher than the Golf - might be worth a look.

I have done 46k miles in mine in just over two years, no reliability problems (touch wood, especially with a 1400mile round trip to LeMans/Brittany this week) with them as long as you don't get silly with increasing the power.
