Well i have had many rovers over the years and i really liked them. Only once has a rover let me down in over 10 years which can't be bad. Let's see if VW can do a better job for me!

really? !!!!

even if they did break down, they wouldnt make money on the spares cos that was sold off as a separate division eons ago.

what about the K series problems at 70k plus?

i had a rover 820, that at 4 years old was sold off for a grand. that was because the flywheel came loose and mashed the engine.

My 600 diesel is still going strong at 203000miles, maybe it was one of there better models, when Honda had done some good for them.In actual fact it has the Honda logo on many of the plastic moldings etc.

Hi Paul

I had a rover 600 si 2 litre auto from brand new in 1994 as a company car for 3 years.

after 70k miles, I dont recall anything went wrong with it.

However, it WAS basically a honda accord with bits changed tom make it look like a rover. The dip stick, for instance, said honda on it. The whole engine was a honda unit.

I think the Rover 600 was killed off too soon - it came out after the 200 - 400 if i recall, and has been deleted for about 5 years, whilst the 200 - 400 basically drag on.


My main point is its daft to infer that

"that is prob the reason for them going out of busness there cars never broke down"

when its clearly because they are making early 90s cars that no one wants.

I think your right there , the 600 was one of the better cars and a product of the Honda link up .I decided to buy one after finding that they were realy hondas but with a styling I prefered.
Maybe they were dropped during the ownership for just that reason .The 600 was the nearest to a BMW rival that Rover produced and could have been developed further.

the rover 75 was seen as the replacement for both the 600 and 800 models.

which was pretty daft really, as the 600 was a family car and the 800 an exec car.

I had a rover 414si, base model, all mod cons, windy windows, hot or hotter heating, manual steering, single point injection. 110,00 miles on a J plate, only thing to go wrong was the water pump, and what a complete b*tch that was to fix.

My mum had a rover 214sli j reg for years and the only thing that went wrong with it was the head gasket went which all k series do. It then blew again cos it wasnt skimmed but that was my parents being tight.

Rovers are great cars. Id have one..

I had a rover 414 on an M plate for a week once..... went really well for a 1.4. quite liked it.

I had it for a week during the many times my 820 had to be fixed.

Back in 86 i used to sell Austin Rover cars at a garage in Kingswood, Surrey. Myself and a salesman from our other garage (Vauxhall) went to the grand launch of the Rover 800. The other chap refused to go to Brum in my metro and we were not allowed to go in his Cavaleir sri so we had to borrow the Parts managers Meistro 1.3!!!!

Needless to say it broke down on the way to the launch and by the time it got fixed (4 knackered spark plugs!!!!!!) and got to Brum it was all over. We had the free lunch and a quick look at the car and came back!!!

Says it all really!

i used to work for budget rent a car and we had a fleet of sierra's inc' xr4x4's, granada scorpios, escorts, orions, fiesta's,
fiat tipo's and some "montego's",
the montegos were 'orrible they drove like tanks and every gear change clunked and the whole gearbox shaked like mad,
but they held the road well around roundabouts.... but we had an MG turbo which was pretty quick.... but needless to say they went to auction after 3 month's unlike all the others...
the xr4x4's were nice once you take the limiter off

bit contrary, but ill defend rover here.

ive had several A series engined rovers, inc 2 minis and 2 metros, never had engine probs,


had a montego estate from brand new, it was a fine car. only issue was that when you revved to 6k in 4th and changed to top, once in a while the engine management would go nits and dump profuse smoke, james bond style, out the back. only lifting off for 10 secs and ticking over would stop it!
