Could this be what you had in mind?
Plenty of el cheapo Chinese tiny capacity gas engines designed for mounting on almost anything these days.
I had a petrol powered skate board a few years ago, it was about the size of a snow board, it was the most dangerous thing I've ever been on. I suppose it would get up to about 20mph maybe a bit more depending on weight of the person and if you fell off you knew about it! Needless to say I got rid of it.
I have one if you want some close up photos of how it works? It's all pretty simple tbh.

I built this about 4 years ago.

It's still going stong, I use it every weekend and have done a fair few thousand miles on it. Just the magneto has been replaced so far. Top
speed is 66 kph going down a hill and 40 kph on the flat.
I think they have an outlet in the UK.

What's the legal position on them? Aren't they just a moped in effect and therefore subject to the same rules?
Gopeds or those bikes? Gopeds are certainly not road legal unfortunately.
Actually it would be easier to get my mobility scooter 'on the road' - all it needs to be legal is a device to prevent it going over 8mph.
Shame though that you have to be registered disabled to use it.
Chris
Want to do it as a project & prob use it for getting around at race weekends ect just a bit of fun really
