I could find a new use for my welding helmet in the morning, weather permitting.

We did that in 1999 for the total eclipse. We didn't want to travel down to Cornwall just for the eclipse though, so we had a proper holiday and watched the eclipse from the top of an Austrian mountain. I've got eclipse glasses this time, so that our kids can take them into school.
I've been handing out welding mask lenses to my kids chums........I hope a No.14 won't turn them blind.
I'm more an EW9 myself.
Be careful as welding glass doesn't filter all the things that blind ya!
You need a 13/14 one and put it over the camera and take some pics!
nice and clear down here, using a welding mask to have a peek at it
A No.10 seems OK for me. Perfect view in LE11.
Clear sky in LE14. I'll be watching via phone camera, welding mask isn't here
Great views here in East Lothian.
Lincolnshire good too
was good in LE5 too
Was pants in Sussex, didn't really change light at all,
Couldnt see it here... to cloudy and it didnt hang around
Anticlimax here, deep clouds just went a little colder and the clouds darkened a bit. Boo.
Was too cloudy for a good photo but managed this

not as good as the 99 one - had lovely weather for that.
In Aberdeen we were very lucky as the cloud cleared through the whole thing then had very light high clouds which allowed everyone to see it clearly
without the need for filters. It got very dark and cold.
The whole office was up at the windows watching it, this was taken through the office window -

Description
From the Gallowgate in Aberdeen
Was visible in Bristol, used a pin hole to watch the shadow then looked at the reflection in the window monetarily which was super clear but also
blinding. I was really impressed with the pin hole method, started with a hole about 5-10mm across then made a sub mm hole which made a tiny but super
clear image.
The Radio times said not to use welding goggles.
Welding goggles are just a tinted lens (for gas welding).
An arc welding lens as well as lowering light levels is also a filter, blocking both infra red & ultra violet
and is perfectly ok for looking at the sun, or any other nuclear explosion.

It got darker but too cloudy to see anything here in Herts.
Grey cloud in east Suffolk - until late morning, when the sun came out...
It did get very gloomy for a while though.
Bit of a non event in Saffron Walden
Good show today looking through some xray film!! Cloudly all morning then just cleared for about 10minutes right on time! Have some cool no filter
pics.. How do you attach a picture into a
Post?
Clear sky in telford today... Cracked the DSLR out and these were my attempts:
This sums it up for me...

It has some "apocalyptic" aura.
No wonder I'm the past eclipses (sp?) were regarded as bad or ominous events...

Cheers. I should point out it was taken using an filter that only allows the infra red spectrum through, which gives the colouring.
So this is digital camera meaning the ccd sensor detects into the IR, otherwise youd use IR sensitive film right?
theduck - 22/3/15 at 06:30 PMCorrect. Though IR sensitive film would be B&W.
