Hi All.
A question for the fungi experts. I'm sure we have some, as we seem to have everything else.
I've got about fifty of these come up in my lawn.
Doesn't show up well on the pic but the underside is a light brown.
Edible mushrooms or the devils poison?

Looks like a common earth ball which is the one responsible for most uk mushroom poisonings!
all mushrooms are edible at least once.........................

The inside of an earth ball is a blue/black colour and doesn't have the pink/brown gills shown in 907's pic so I am pretty certain it's not an earth ball.
Pretty sure they are a member of the Agaricus family, which includes both edible and poisonous mushrooms. Identifying White Mushrooms is a handy guide.

It's not worth a dose of the trots or worse, go up asda and buy some.
Dont take chances with mushrooms. Some are fatal or can result in serious health problems like liver failure.
You cannot do the edibilty tests that you with other foods - read the survival guides for more info,.

To put it into context there are only a handful that will kill you. There are plenty that are not edible because they taste bad. I am no expert, so
look but don't eat. I really need to do a course!
In France, any pharmacy will have a resident mushroom expert who will tell you if what you have picked can be eaten - good system imho.

I don't think I'll try to eat them, although I am off to hospital tomorrow morning anyway,
but as it's for an op I'm "nil by mouth" from tea time today.
It's been a long wait for this so I don't want to jeopardise this and end up at the bottom of the list again.
I've bruised one to see what happens and will photograph another when it gets to full size.

Paul - all things considered, sampling random fungi is NOT a good idea in your current situation!

Nothing obvious from the bruise.
The bigger they get the flatter they get, and the pinky brown underside gets darker.
It has a skirt.
No nasty smell.
From Mike's link, possibly Agaric ? = edible ?
Could the colour and pattern on the top be due to exposure to sun & rain ?
Supermarket mushrooms are grown in the dark.
