What the eff is this for?
Mark Allanson - 8/11/04 at 11:09 PM

This is not a quiz, this 'item' was bought at auction for a quid, by one of the valetors at work. It is not a toy, too well built. It is mahogany with black leather covering, the lever on the side is ratcheted and tensions the shaft on the column. The odd looking thing on the wheel is mitred and looks like it holds something.

What is it???? Rescued attachment OddThing.JPG

sommat for steering/keeping straight a boat?

Peteff - 8/11/04 at 11:46 PM

Looks like part of an auto pilot system. Try the phone number on the plate or check the patent number.

JoelP - 8/11/04 at 11:51 PM

'static steer' would seem to imply something to do with auto pilotry.

'Static Steering' would be the act of turning the wheel while stationary ready to then travel/move in the desired direction. The tensioner on the side of the shaft would stop the wheel moving from the chosen position...... I was going to suggest a maritime purpose initially but changed my mind.

Apart from that I aint got a clue! - It does'nt look like it will hook up to an xbox for a game of 'Toca Race Driver 2' though

Some kind of hands free / auto steering gizmo for a boat?

mackie - 9/11/04 at 09:49 AM

I dunno, but I'll go with the gaming theme and suggest you put the internals from a Logitech driving force pro in it

Its definately off of a very old model Boeing 747 .They used to call it static steering before they thought up the name Autopilot.
Cheers,

Sorry to be sensible here but it looks to me like steering off a yacht - if you are into sailing solo or don't want to stand holding the wheel all day you could just lock it into position then sit on deck and drink beer
