Had an expensive week, and it's only Monday...

I've spent ages deliberating on whether to buy a motorbike or not, and also what new tin top I should get.

I have taken the plunge on both counts and am picking up an '06 Saab 9-3 Aero tomorrow and have done a deal on a Honda XL125R, which I will use for some practice until I pass my test and also for some green laning (my mate and I fancy doing the Fosse Way - should be interesting on a 125!).

I've spent so long looking for both these things, I'm not sure what to do with my time now

I know what you mean - I've booked a 4month trip to Cambodia, Vietnam, New Zealand, Fiji, Oz and Thailand...

sometimes the looking is the best bit for me, especially with cars but also with other things!

Great stuff, Saab is a nice motor for eating the miles in comfort.

xl...well it wouldnt be my first choice, but I guess whilst building up to your licence it ticks a box. You can be sure it will be reliable if nothing else.

I went for the XL as I think pre '85 125's have a bit more credibility than later models - mainly because IMHO the later 125's were always a compromise so that the manufacturers could continue to sell bikes to learner drivers.

I did have my eye on a Honda SL125, but it needed work and went for a lot more than I was willing to pay. Then there are TL 125's, but they're expensive as well.

So, the XL hits the spot for me - 4t single and reliable as can be for green laning.

Don't envy your wallet, I'm just booking flights to go out to Oz and see my daughter in January, over £2500 just for the flights, high season, that's the problem (could leave the Mrs at home I suppose)
Edit... she says no

We're arriving in Oz on the 6th and are there at least until the middle of Feb - have working visas so may well stay longer. What part of Oz are you going to?

Ultra functional bike and engines - really well made and just go on forever.

The only thing I don't like is that someone chose to paint the engine black at some point - meant to be silver.

Still, the bloke I bought it from had it for his son, and rebuilt the engine and fettled a lot of things - always good to buy from entusiastic Dad as no parent would put their son on a death trap

Hey, we're going on the 6th, staying until early Feb. We're going to Queensland, a place called Gladstone about 350 miles north of Brisbane. The plan is to hire a bus, load up daughter, S_I_L and gandchildren and spend a couple of weeks exploring northern Queensland up as far as Cairns.
