OK, I know this is very very far off topic but given we're all capable of using many different tolls I wonder if someone can tell me why the hell I seem to be unable to use a tin opener.

In the past 2-3 years we must have had at least 10 different tin openers, from cheapo £1 jobs up to around £20, the current one is a Prestige one which i think was about £15 and it's abolsute cack. I'm pretty sure I've not opened a tin in the last 3 years without it looking like I've done it with a chain saw, they always just slip off the side or don't cut.

What the hell is going on? I can build a car but can't open tins properly.

So, anyone recommend a tin opener that actually does that one thing I want it to - open tins!!!

I prefer this type, and I always use them horizontally, this may give you a sharp edge on the tin rim, but means the top just lifts off rather than having to scoop it out.

Nah, in all seriousness, I find I squeeze the handles too tight and it makes for hard work.

Had This one for years and it has always worked very well.

I got one simillar to Mookaloids. I can't work most tin openners (Mostly due to left handedness) but those kind work really well.

That said there are automated ones, we had one when I was a kid.

My missus bought one of those jml battery ones. Really simple, it just clips itself on the can and goes around the can all by itself and cuts the lid off on the side of the can. Leaves no sharp edge on the lid.

Are you putting them on right? Some fit on top of the can, some on the sides. My missus struggled with ours until I showed her how to put it on properly.

One of those battery powered powered self holding things.

See the problem is you trying to re-engineer a solution for something simple...

Go to Tescos and spend 45p on one of these, then like the 50 old pillar drill this should last you a life time.........
