Mark Allanson - 22/5/04 at 10:07 PM

Lets start a competion to find the ugliest kit ever produced

I'll start it off with this monstrosity Rescued attachment UglyMug.JPG

robinbastd - 22/5/04 at 10:12 PM

You win.

zetec - 22/5/04 at 10:17 PM

The yellow one aint much better.

M@Triton - 22/5/04 at 10:20 PM

Big pair of fat ladies pants it may be.......but at least it aint a 7 or cobra clone...........

M@Triton - 22/5/04 at 10:22 PM

originality is what the kit industry needs.........7's and cobra's will look like Ford Fiesta's soon......."shit which one is mine"

pbura - 22/5/04 at 10:26 PM

The King Midget springs to mind:

JoelP - 22/5/04 at 10:33 PM

marks monstrosity at least has some judge dredd cartoon style, pete's midget is the current leader in my books...

mangogrooveworkshop - 22/5/04 at 10:39 PM

Beat this ugly snorkle nosed chitty chitty bang bang clone

robinbastd - 22/5/04 at 10:42 PM

Nomination for the worst looking in production now.........Banham Bat. God willing the new owner of that project will take a chainsaw to the moulds

mangogrooveworkshop - 22/5/04 at 10:48 PM

The corbin sparrow they are getting worse
LOL

pbura - 22/5/04 at 10:51 PM

Ah, the Midget was a ringer, shouldn't have thrown it out so soon Not sure it qualifies as a car, anyway.

I've been looking at cars I remembered as being atrocious, but the loving restorers trick them out so that they look pretty good!

Keep 'em coming, gents.

mangogrooveworkshop - 22/5/04 at 10:58 PM

Have we won the last world war mmmmmm cause they are still making cars for it.........LOL

mangogrooveworkshop - 22/5/04 at 11:13 PM

You may never see one of these things. It's a sort of bizarre cross between a Lotus Elan (thats the back bit you can't really see here) and a duck billed platypus (thats the front bit). The rear section is built in Tipton and the front in Malta. Destined to sell in single numbers..... (according to several e-mails from Finland, 'Kamala' happens to mean 'hideous' in Finnish!)

mangogrooveworkshop - 22/5/04 at 11:19 PM

not sure this qualifies but have a look any way The pig ugly buckeye

Peteff - 22/5/04 at 11:21 PM

If anyone's selling any of these there may be a demand, but only if worn

Browser - 22/5/04 at 11:21 PM

This gets my vote, the Hustler, I believe designed by William Towns of Jaguar fame.

stephen_gusterson - 22/5/04 at 11:24 PM

well, everyones different but.....

I think the green thing if it wasnt green might be ok - it kinda looks like a car I saw a year or so ago at a show called a reynart.....

The dax kamala, in my view, is a really great looking car. didnt top gear or a motoring prog have one on test once?

I like it.

The only ugly kit car I can think of - and its not notably ugly - is the big luego thing - the orange object at the top of the page.

and....there was a kit called a mini scamp 30 or so years back - basically looked like a popemobile - a welded tube frame with the gaps filled in with metal at the bottom and glass at the top

In fac the hustler looks a fair bit like it, but better

Dyer mean Ronart Steve? They used to buil'em in Peterborough and damned nice they were too. The 'green thing' is a Moss Monaco, once described in a Kit Car magazine guide to the industry as a 'pop-eyed GRP oil drum on wheels', pretty accurate if you ask me

One of the TV motor mags tested it a while back, Cossie YB motor 'n all and liked it. Me? I look at it, just get to the point where I think I might start to like it..................................then don't.

Yeeesssss, I can see some folks woudn't take to the Viento, it is a little on the large side.

Wasn't that basically a kit-form Mini Moke? In which case,it was not ugly, it was 'retro' and 'cool'

scoobyis2cool - 23/5/04 at 01:38 AM

For me nothing can beat the monstrosity that is... the Onxy Fastcat. It looks even worse from the back but I couldn't find a pic

scoobyis2cool - 23/5/04 at 01:39 AM

Actually looking at it against some of the others cars in this post the Fastcat starts to look quite appealing! Maybe it's not the worst after all!

Pete

pbura - 23/5/04 at 02:43 AM

The Tiffany -- I think I'd like it with wider whitewalls Rescued attachment 2983.jpg

Cita - 23/5/04 at 07:01 AM

Pete,is that the copper section of the London Philarmonic sitting on the front bumper?

mangogrooveworkshop - 23/5/04 at 10:10 AM

So who`s the winner.

[Edited on 23-5-04 by mangogrooveworkshop]

dave1888 - 23/5/04 at 10:32 AM

The Fastcat gets my vote.

Peteff - 23/5/04 at 11:06 AM

I actually like the six wheeler Hustler but can't remember it being for sale as a kit. The popeyed oildrum looks like a kid drew it out and somebody made an exact copy. The Onyx Fastcat wins as they are serious and ought to know better. The Tiffany Pete, I thought all American cars looked like that .

[Edited on 23/5/04 by Peteff]

scoobyis2cool - 23/5/04 at 11:08 AM

Yay, do I get a prize for nominating the winner?

Pete

Cita - 23/5/04 at 01:33 PM

The Landrover in the first picture

Spyderman - 23/5/04 at 01:58 PM

There have been some monsterous kits over the years> Henson (M30?) must be amongst them. There was also something that was built in Scotland and looked like it crawled out of Loch Ness that was truelly horrible.

Of those pictured above I think the Hustler is cool. Would like one of those for a general run around, but not the Jag based one! Anyone know of one for sale?

Of current kits the Onyx has to be the ugliest thing going!
Has anyone bought one yet and do they have a seat for the Guide dog?
It looks like it was designed by a 13 year old who had to add every bulge and accessory available from Halfrauds!

At least the others have some angle that they don't look too bad from!

Terry

Part of the reason foreign cars started getting such a big market share in the '70s I think Ford and Chrysler products are quite good-looking these days; only General Motors just doesn't seem to 'get it', styling-wise.

Dick Axtell - 23/5/04 at 03:38 PM

Guys -

The description was the ugliest kit car. For me, that 80's Cygnet takes the prize. Sorry, no pic - yet!

This kit allegedly recreated the Countach style, for the Cortina chassis!! Antbody ever seen one?

scotlad - 23/5/04 at 03:49 PM

Not sure still which is the ugliest, but if you ever buy an ice cream cone in North Berwick, theres a good chance it'll be from........... a Hustler!!!! still see it driving around occasionally and have purchased a 99 from it meself.

There must be a misunderstanding here. A “kit-car” is when you buy pieces that you put together into a car, not when you buy a car that falls apart into pieces.

scotlad - 23/5/04 at 03:51 PM

on second thoughts--------- its got to be the king midget! utterly horrible....

Peteff - 23/5/04 at 04:30 PM

Brilliant, a self dismantling donor . There's a kit I always did like but it never did anything, I think the donors all rotted away too quick for it to have a chance.

http://www.bmc1100.co.uk/ran.shtml

Another Moke lookalike but a bit more stylised I think. The six wheel thing's not bad either.

Mk-Ninja - 23/5/04 at 07:09 PM

yes

I meant ronart

this is an example of a nice looking car....

"The only ugly kit car I can think of - and its not notably ugly - is the big luego thing - the orange object at the top of the page"

Steve - IIRC you've just aquired another BMW. Think that disqualifies you

Spiderman - agree - think the Hustler a great car. Was available with V12!!!!

yes.

and its like night and day compared to the other one.

anyone looking for a tax friendly company car wont go wrong with a bmw 3 series 320d. I have the 'touring' version, and its just spent the weekend effortlessly lugging stuff to build a patio with.

0-60 in a little less than 9 secs, 134 mph. At 70, its doing 2,000 rpm, and at 100, approx 2,800!

the 318i was a gutless wonder - this is so much better.

so

atb

steve

ps - dont beleive diesel economy - this is doing about the same as the 318i did - around 37mpg - but I get 32 extra hp for it...

Browser - 24/5/04 at 03:20 AM

I know it's off topic a little, but can I nominate an ugly supercar? If so, it'd be that monstrosity the Pagani Zonda, awful cab-forward proportions and a butt-ugly front end to boot, horrible!

Cita - 24/5/04 at 06:08 AM

Why are those "supercars" so bloody expencive?
It can't be for aerodynamic windtunnel research 'cause most of them are pure clone's of the Le Mans racecars.
It can't be for the engine devellopement 'cause most of them use blocks from Chevy-Audi-Merc etc...
A lot of small shops in the UK can do a quality leather trim for a reasonable price tag.
On the other hand, if you wonna retire after selling 5 cars than most of those super cars aren't that expencive at all!

mackie - 24/5/04 at 10:01 AM

I've often wondered how much it actually costs to make something like a zonda or a koenigsegg.
I guess it's down to low volumes and that fact that pretty much everything is hand made.
But even figuring in the exotic materials the large number of manhours the markups must be pretty big.
I personally like the zonda but I think lambo are bang on the button with the looks of the murcielago and gallardo.
This has gone off-topic, sorry.

sir, i must object! pistols at dawn?!

the zonda is, IMVHO, one of the most beautiful devices ever devised, and though i've not seen one in the flesh, i would swap my left bollok for one. maybe the right one too, though its my favourite...

mackie - 24/5/04 at 12:00 PM

I have seen a zonda in the flesh and it is exquisite, every detail finely crafted to perfection.

Your challenge is taken up sir, lest I besmirch the honour of my family! Will it be spudguns or water pistols?

Seriously though, I just don't like the thing, in the same way a lot of people don't like one of my all-time favourites, the Lamborghini Countach. Whatever floats yer boat and all that............

JoelP - 24/5/04 at 10:08 PM

ah, i love the look of the countach... it has a classic hardcore look. Thats another example of a car that is easier to purchase than to maintain though.

chrisg - 24/5/04 at 10:58 PM

'course I sat in a Zonder at Le Mans last year, little bit of trivia for you there.

Cheers

Chris

It belonged to a crazy Dutch guy, who claimed to be the biggest pornographer in Holland!, and the aircon was bust and he was sweating like a pig!!

Mark H - 25/5/04 at 06:57 AM

The Landrover?

What a marvel of a vehicle. I'd like to see any of these kit cars go down a quarry. (Mine is in my avatar!)

Thinking about it, I would like to see all of these kit cars going into a quarry!!

chrisg - 25/5/04 at 08:13 PM

That's the one John, I had a wander over when I'd been to the facilities, brilliant car but very fragile apparently. Not so cheap either

Cheers

mangogrooveworkshop - 25/5/04 at 11:46 PM

waste of good steel
[img]http://www.motoring.co.za/site/30/picdb/article0/3/8/29740[/img] the precrashed new car from rover linkhere This the latest V8 displaces 4.6 litres and is capable of 195kW and 410Nm that can be tamed with cruise and traction control. Top speed about 240km/h and, surprise, the same motor is used in the US to power the Ford Mustang. ( nuther lump of soft sh*T)

Zonda
Zonda

Browser, I believe Boots do free eye tests Mind you, not much use if your eyes are painted on.

I agree with Joel. And I'd also give both his bo!!ocks to own one.

[Edited on 26-5-04 by Hellfire]

Browser - 26/5/04 at 09:35 AM

Sorry, still think it's as ugly as a hatful of bums!

russbost - 4/8/11 at 09:39 PM

Stop arguing the Zonda is quite lovely & I would happily give all your boll*x for one!

Re the Fastcat/Bobcat, I've never seen one in the flesh (thankfully!), but I do remember reading some reviews of it & it was very cheap & very quick, seem to remember it embarassed quite a few Westfields at hillclimbs? People have described it as current, it's not made anymore is it?

Going right back to the OP's post, or rather the immediately subsequent ones - where does anyone suggest it's Sevanesque? That appears to have come from here not the advert???

There were lots of very strange (& frequently pretty ugly, if that's not an oxymoron!) kitcars around in the '70's & '80's, but at least there was a bit of imagination around then, tho' I'm staggered that any of you fussy b*ggars can actually find the Hustler attractive, it is after all literally a pile of flat sheet glass & plywood (Fact!)

Now if you want a properly ugly & truly useless vehicle how about the Porsche Cayenne or their latest monstrosity whose name escapes me (something like the Gayman only it's not quite) you know ,looks like an over inflated 997 but with 4 doors, but for me the Cayenne has lost its crown as I think the Audi Q7 is actually even more ugly & useless!!

OOOps - wonder how many of you own any of the above!

scootz - 4/8/11 at 09:44 PM

Proby - 4/8/11 at 09:49 PM

Lol, I hope they have stopped arguing about the Zonda as it was 7 years ago!

russbost - 4/8/11 at 09:57 PM

That's weird - it came up on the "Topics with recent activity" section, but I appear to be the first "new" poster - I hadn't looked at the dates, doesn't make sense!

loggyboy - 4/8/11 at 10:01 PM

I bet someone posted, which brought it to the top, then deleted their post when they realised it was older than ur granny.

[Edited on 4/8/11 by loggyboy]

russbost - 4/8/11 at 10:06 PM

No, Sussed it - entirely my own fault, followed the link on Mark Allansons post in "worst sevanalike ever?" & didn't notice I'd gone into a timewarp!!! Hadn't come up in the recent posts till I put it there!!

Note to self - don't post after drinking large quantities of red wine, or at least pay more attention to details like dates!

Ninehigh - 5/8/11 at 07:22 AM

That got me too:

"I don't know when to leave well alone... Huh, that's, yeah ChrisG he got banned ages ago he.. This is from 2004... What's going on here!!!"

Zonda's not ugly but it is a bit odd...
