I camped about 2 nights at a caravan park a couple of years ago on Tae Kwon Do summer camp. I dislike camping but there wasn't any other option.

Whilst walking up to the washrooms I had a look at the caravan area. I truly couldn't see anything enjoyable at all! A week or two spent sitting next to your own van looking at other pasty, fat people sitting next to their van looking at all your and their washing strung up between them.
Truly miserable!

I decided I'd rather stay at home!

How much do caravans cost? Compared to flight and apartment rental?

For £100 each my girlfriend, our best friends and I flew to Southern Spain, rented a beautiful apartment (for under £300 between us) and got uninterupted sunshine, nice beaches, 2 pools, cheap booze and good restaurants and more stunning topless/nude totty than you could shake your (ahem) stick at.

I guess caravans are useful for staying at track days etc. but for a holiday??? Shudder!

I'd quite like a caravan, useful for visiting/having guests aswell as for events. My Great Aunt and Uncle have one they bought whilst their house was being refurbed and they love it.

I had a 10 day holiday in a caravan last year in Devon.

What a nightmare, my missus and kids usually go away with the outlaws for a week in the caravan every year (I stay at home and work), but I was forced to go along last year.

I normally only pop down their caravan for a Saturday / Sunday and have to sleep for one night, so I get blasted and sleep in the awning.

Agree with James, spent a fortune, could have gone abroad for not a lot more.

Never again, never, never, never (well until I'm told I have too )

Only way I would have a caravan is if I had a piece of land and was building a house.

Even them it would have no wheels and fuel the logburner once the house was finished!

I didn't think folks went cravnning to sit alongside their 'vans and look at each other. I'd happily take a caravan as somewhere to sleep. Much like I do now with my Bongo(........which I have for sale!).
The caravan wouldn't be part of the holiday, but more of a tool to make the holiday happen. A bit like a tent but warmer and already erect. And with a toilet, shower, sink, cooker etc........
If we go Bongoing or camping it's just a cheap way to get away. If we go somewhere we like we stay. If we don't like it, we trundle off to the next place.
For those who spend hundreds on such a trip, that's your choice but I can go away for a couple of weeks for the price of diesel.....and a few packets of Super Noodles.

I HATE caravaning with a passion but absolutely love chugging along on a narrow boat.

if you use it like owelly say there is nowt wrong with the vans

my parents have always had one - but it only goes on couple of trips a year nad tend to stay in one place - none of this touring all over the country stuff
(total time on the road bust be less than 10 hours a year)

There's nothing wrong with caravans, all my panelling on the car is made from an old one, the chassis will be my car transporter, and the wooden frame kept me in kindling for most of the winter

Caravans are for Pikeys.

We decided a year or so back that a caravan would be a good way of forcing us (as a family) to spend more quality time together. Rather than come the weekend, when I go off to work Sat am, we though it would be nice to go away Fri night come back Sun eve.

As owelly says, the caravan is somewhere to stick your head at night, it isn't the holiday but the means to the end.

Next year we'll be using it a lot, but this year most of our holidaying has been booked up.

Mark got his caravan quite cheap, we've paid a bit more (though we did fancy a new Bailey Senator Carolina, but couldn't justify the £17k)

As for going abroad, France is about as far as we can be bothered to go - we have friends in Brittany, and may go and park the van in their front garden

Nothing wrong with a caravan, as long as you can tow it a bit faster than 35!

Many years ago the wife thought it would be great to own a caravan.

We'd need a drive and a concrete plinth to park it on I told her.
So I filled the ditch, cut a gap in the hedge, layed a drive across the front lawn and put a 6 x 3M concrete base beside the house.

Bought a 'van, used it twice, sold it, and built a workshop on the plinth.

Best thing I've ever done.


Yup...... Wonderful things, caravans.
