Does anyone know what this is?
Apparently it was used on an early mini.

It's probably to undo the the top and bottom balljoints from the upright. They are shimmed so you can compensate for wear, which involves a lot of screwing around

blakep82 - 28/5/09 at 06:41 PM

quite a big hex for that though...

hmm, i can't remember anything like that on my mini..

unless its for the tower bolts or whatever they were called, for the top bolts for the front subframe?

flak monkey - 28/5/09 at 06:42 PM

Cartridge oil filter spanner?

fov - 28/5/09 at 06:47 PM

I seem to remember it being for the subframe.

LBMEFM - 28/5/09 at 06:59 PM

Not sure what size it is but is it not for the clutch adjustment bolts, ie slaken one adjust then relock, situated on the cover on the left hand side on the engine

blakep82 - 28/5/09 at 07:02 PM

actually, it looks a bit big for the subframe too...

trikerneil - 28/5/09 at 07:03 PM

Sure it's for a mini?

It's octagonal, looks like an immersion heater spanner to me.

blakep82 - 28/5/09 at 07:07 PM

lol it is octagonal isn't it! oops, yeah, it looks perfect for imersion heaters....

Russell - 28/5/09 at 07:22 PM

It's definitely something to do with the clutch but I can't remember what exactly.

mookaloid - 28/5/09 at 08:01 PM

What size is it?

Well spotted

The clutch throw adjuster is also a hex, and much smaller than that looks.

My second guess is a spanner for the octagonal spinners used on wire wheel MGs.

f1ngers - 28/5/09 at 08:28 PM

If it's 1 1/2" it's for the front balljoints. Can also be used for the flywheel nut although that is usually a 1 1/2" socket
Oh Yeah didn't realise it was octagonal!

Mini's were never fitted with octaganal nuts in any position .The flywheel bolt and the ball joint nuts are hexaganal.

DIY Si - 28/5/09 at 09:08 PM

as others have said, no way is it for a mini, as it's not a hex key!

Daddylonglegs - 28/5/09 at 09:32 PM

I'll second the immersion heater theory

Ahh the very early minis with the immersion heater in the hot water tank. Used to warm the interior up in the winter and provide warm water to the washer jets to help remove ice / snow

I still have all my old spanners from when I had Minis and none of them look like an immersion heater spanner

smartfazer - 29/5/09 at 06:11 AM

It looks like an immersion heater spanner to me.

woodster - 29/5/09 at 09:18 AM

if its 86mm or 3 3/8 A/F its an immersion heater spanner

Marcus - 29/5/09 at 11:44 AM

Looks like a spanner to remove the badges form an MG

rusty nuts - 29/5/09 at 06:33 PM

It could fit the rear hub nut on something like an Austin Cambridge or Morris Oxford , ISTR the were octaganal?

MikeR - 29/5/09 at 06:44 PM

i keep thinking fuel tank - but can't think why.

smart51 - 29/5/09 at 06:52 PM

If it's 1 1/2" then it will do the front ball joints. I opened out an adjustable spanner and welded it
