Ben_Copeland - 2/2/09 at 07:43 AM

I'm stuck in the Car Park at work. Was going to Birmingham. Not NOW !!!

3 inches snow in Dartford.

Got out the van leaving engine running and in gear. Walked round the van, got back in and it hadn't moved an inch

ReMan - 2/2/09 at 07:48 AM

Yep, just had my first malingering member of staff text me to say they can't get in due to 6" of snow and no busses In Londinium
No wonder there's a reccesion

Guinness - 2/2/09 at 08:04 AM

1" of snow here in Newcastle this morning. Will be taking the young un to school in a minute.

Then what is normally a 20 min drive to the office! Wonder how long it'll take this morning!

eznfrank - 2/2/09 at 08:04 AM

I was supposed to be going to South East London today from Leeds - not a chance. Can't get the car out the yard and my ma's been at the bus stop for about an hour and no bus. My gaffer told me not to bother but our lass's boss told her to "keep trying". Keep trying what??? I can't get car out and there's no bus. Now where did I put that helicopter?

Daimo_45 - 2/2/09 at 08:06 AM

Birmingham's fine. The main roads are clear and residential streets have less than a centimetre of snow. No problems at all.

corrado vr6 - 2/2/09 at 08:06 AM

No Work for me either!! Good Times

blakep82 - 2/2/09 at 08:11 AM

theres a few patches of white outside. nothing much though. this is supposed to be scotland...

jabbahutt - 2/2/09 at 08:11 AM

Would this of made national news if the snow hadn't landed on London? bit like the flooding a few years back. Sheffield etc got hit and there was a bit of coverage. However when it looked like the centre of the known universe was going to get a bit damp it was 24hr non stop coverage.

We had some snow last night but all the roads are clear.

For those who can't get in to work enjoy the day off and get in the garage

martinq357 - 2/2/09 at 08:12 AM

Glad I wasn't at work last night (Heathrow), I think I'd still be there waiting for the day shift to arrive!

Schools in Surrey are shut so the kids are going mad for snow man construction at the moment (....... Oh and I might help a bit too....)!

ravingfool - 2/2/09 at 08:13 AM

foot and a half here, near Guildford in Surrey and growing all the time, not a hope in hell of getting out of my road!

Just walked down to the main road at what should be rush hour, stood in the middle of the road and took photos of nothing at all visible in either direction.

Cannot believe this, I was meant to be starting a new job in kingston this morning

A246 through Effingham - would normally be nose to tail at this hour:

Richard Quinn - 2/2/09 at 08:14 AM

The biggest problem I face is the business park where our office is. It's a fairly new park and they don't grit the road up to it (which is uphill) and then there is another steeper hill into the park itself. I then have to go up a hill and down the other side to get to the lower level car park. I don't know whether it is something to do with the blocked surface but it is always treacherous with any snow or ice on it. Anyway, turned to go through this part this morning and discovered a new route through the bushes! Even if I was to go back I would have to go down the steep slope out of the park on to the downhill ungritted access road and try to stop at the traffic lights at the major junction at the bottom of the hill or I'll be sliding across 4 lanes of the A49! There have been 5 accidents in the last 2 months that I'm aware of at that junction. Most are single vehicle ones but the cars sustain a lot of damage due to traffic islands, pedestrian barriers, traffic lights, bollards and lighting columns but still the council won't grit even the bottom of the road by the junction

Ben_Copeland - 2/2/09 at 08:16 AM

But the roads to birmingham arent !!!!

nitram38 - 2/2/09 at 09:15 AM

I've just brushed 20cm off it off my tintop and there is a drift of about 40cm around the car.
I have to drive to work for a nightshift tonight!

Nope......in snowy Walton on Thames .... it is just about the same as Guildford..... my wheels are over half buried on the tin-top....so about 7 and a half inches....

Mind, it is all my fault.....blame me.... I made a penguin (pingu) birthday cake last night for one of the little-'uns ... it (pingu) obviously wanted to go out and play!

David Jenkins - 2/2/09 at 10:13 AM

Bit of a grin in the office today - out of around 30 people, 6 made it in - all the ones who live furthest away! (I'm 45 miles away).

The big chief lives just 2 or 3 miles down the road, and he's decided to work from home... boy, is he going to get the mickey taken when he next gets in the office!

(Mind you, he did say that if the weather got worse, we can all go home... )

Benzine - 2/2/09 at 10:15 AM

I just went for a drive, not to get to work, just for the lulz. I got about 2 miles from home and 2 eejits had abondoned their cars side by side blocking the road! Why on earth couldn't one of them backed up a bit and parked on the same side? There were some mad farmers behind them. I left an "I park like an idiot" sticker on their screens and went home.

Simalar here, 4 of us travelled 30 miles which took 2 hours when we get to the workshop STILL noone else there, eventually the most local (under a mile) arrived at 9:30. not bad for an 8am start.

Oh yes it is!!!

When I left G'ford last night about 9pm it was coming down so hard I could only see about 10' in front of me. Arrived home ( 6 miles away) and there was hardly any in comparison.
Okay, there's now 10" here but the difference was interesting.

Cheers,
James

LOL ..... when off-spring number 4 came round last night at 6pm ...... he had problems seeing through the blizzard......said it was totally different back in Byfleet (hardly any)...in comparison

Ah...and the M25 around here was shut last night, and the Painshill Junction A3..... (that has just re-opened) .... it seems as though it fell heavily in 'pockets' .... NOT just Guildford...

My wife went to heathrow last night and is supposed to be back tonight, now it looks like she will be back on thursday. Is it really that bad.

martyn_16v - 2/2/09 at 11:50 AM

One of my engineers is trying to make it from Kent round to Thorpe Park, he left at 5 this morning and is only at junction 7. The tit, everyone else has claimed they're snowed in and not going out

Typically it's my day off anyway so I don't get a free one

There is now a family of snowmen in my back garden, and a horde of them out front in the close.

Dave, for down here, yes

All joking aside, the Met Office had parts of Sussex, Kent and Surrey on RED alert until about an hour ago...and they don't do that very often.

The main problem is the closing of the M25 in parts of Surrey, and major A roads, not to mention the rail network...... all impassable.

I live about 6 miles as the crow flies from T4 Heathrow, and tbh it doesn't look as bad there as it is here, hence my comment on 'pockets' especially drifting.

Heathrow was closed until about an hour ago, although only 1 runway is now open.
British Airways have cancelled all flights until at least 5pm this evening......so even if it's all systems go then the backlog is going to be bad........

Other half just measured the snow on the shed roof and it is 9 inches deep and snow still falling...... this is most unusual for these parts, and even though roads were gritted, the snow just settled on top....

I hope your wife gets back soon.....

Fozzie

Keep the door shut and stay active, and you won't notice it.

If you've a MIG welder, blast a few bits of metal - should be warm pretty quick...

It's the breeze that gets you when you're working on a car...

PS Ideal time to get the engine out for the chassis refurb - that'll keep you warm!
