Spot the Mistake
Hi All,
It's engine out time to try to find the problem with my clutch.
I suspect the Mondeo concentric clutch slave unit and unfortunately it's an engine out job to inspect.
I did try a borescope but couldn't see the fault so I've bought a new engine crane, as second hand ones seem
to fetch as much as a new one. I'm ready for the removal of the final bolts and hope to lift in the morning.
I had to smile.
Can anyone spot the mistake?

Im assuming it's the engine crane weight limit your talking about

Excellent! Made in China?
My old boss once ordered some O rings from a manufacturer in China ( a very large amount ). They turned up with "insert customer logo
here" printed on them.

When I assembled the beast I must have glanced at it several times before it dawned on me.
Lets hope it works better than its painted.

How do you know that the end figure isn't right? It might have 3 wrong figures.

Even if there was a cuck op with the numbers the crane did a super job of the engine lift.
Now to sort that clutch slave ( and a couple of other jobs that have come to light ).
How many versions are there of the Ford unit? I bet I order the wrong one.

Biggest mistake Paul was buying a crane, you could have borrowed my Epco crane on a semi permanent loan . Hope you get it sorted, did you spot any
problems with the old slave ?

Thanks for the offer Mel but I bought the eBay one as the seller supplied every measurement you could think of,
and as you know space is of a premium in my garage. The roof is only 2m and the up and over reduces that further,
plus the top rear of the crane frame has to allow the door to open.
Didn't see an obvious problem with the slave but I have a couple of theories. I'll take a pic later and try to explain.
The car did 400 miles last year before the clutch drag problem arose.

To carry on:-
The pic shows the set up for the Getrag box to the Lotus 907 engine, with the Mondeo concentric clutch slave.
The bearing feels good and there was no sign of a leak, although the slave was second hand when I fitted it.
I have ordered a new one for the sake of £34.
Originally the back inside surface of the b/h was machined flat and two thicknesses of 12.7mm ally used as spacers.
I originally also made an additional 9.5mm spacer but didn't fit it. (shown laying in bottom of b/h)
I could have this thickness wrong. The (brand new) clutch (Lotus) could have bedded in, and now needs a tad more travel ?
I used 1/4" C/N hydraulic pipe and as you can see it has quite a loop at the top. Possible air trap ?
I'm thinking of buying (from Russbost ?) a braided flexy with a 90 deg elbow that will go direct from slave to master.
It may prove easier to bleed.
Mel, or anyone think of anything else I could have done wrong ?

Might be worth checking the spigot bearing isnt causing the dragging, I've had that a couple of times . From the picture it doesn't look
like there is any flexible hose in the
Pipe work , I would have thought it would be a good idea to fit one as a rigid system is more likely to fail . Another thing to check whilst the
engine is out , make sure the clutch plate moves freely on the first motion shaft. Check the clutch pedal and the master cylinder pushrod as well . I
wouldn't have thought that having the master cylinder down below the slave would cause problems but it may be a good idea to perhaps try a
residual pressure valve to maintain light pressure in the system , just a couple of PSI , I don't know offhand of any with larger thread sizes
to fit your pipe work . As the clutch wears the clearance between the thrust bearing and the slave will alter , check perhaps by taking the clutch
plate out and fitting a spacer approx the thickness of a worn clutch plate?. If all else fails fit a Xflow and type 9 box!
