Bloody Mary car from 1929
nick205 - 10/6/22 at 09:28 AM

Following the recent insolvency/administration threads on Westfield I thought I'd post this up for anyone interested.

It's the "Bloody Mary special". Self built for hill climbs and the like by a couple of brothers in 1929. It's now in Beaulieu National Motor Musem and quite fscinating to look over. Clearly no SVA/IVA to take into account for road worthiness (or a massive amount of driver safety).

The reported build cost in 1929 was £25 (a Google check puts that at approx. £1,692 in today's money).

Cool, looks like a soapbox racer with an exhaust

Rear fenders? Totally excessive safety there

Very nice - rather like that.

It's so you don't get your cravat caught up in the wheel!

It's only got one on the driver's side at least

Thanks for bringing that up, I forgot I always wanted to build one. Spent the evening modelling one

The rear fender (singular) is indeed driver's side only. The rest of the vehicle (when I've seen it up close) pays little heed to driver or pedestrian safety.

I’ve seen it several times and think it’s wonderful, so simple, wooden chassis, very light.
He was a well known motoring journalist as well as driver.

That's it, only what's absolutely required to make it go and no other faff (weight).
