What's this I've just made?

sump guard...
give it to me ...

Looking at the shape of it I'd go with "under engine tray/sump guard" as well.

IIRC you made a rear diffuser for your car so smoothing under the engine as well should give your car a flat bottom nose to tail.

In fact a sneaky check in your photos shows it fitted...

Preparing for the 2022 F1 new ground effect regs?

Questions back:

1. Did you TIG weld the sheets together?
2. If so how do you find TIG welding? (I only have a MIG myself and wonder about moving onto TIG)

SPYDER - 24/9/21 at 07:52 AM

It looks similar to an IKEA flat pack, fold up coffin.
I think they call it a "Kroken".
It looks a bit small though. Might fit a large rabbit.
Or Warwick Davis.

Alternatively it could be a half-finished Origami Class Star Destroyer.

Speaking of Origami, who can identify this chap, seen here balancing a girl on his privates.
The onlooker in the rowboat looks like a young David Cameron. Later in the day he's going to be performing the same trick.
Only with Peppa Pig.

Yep Johnemms got it right, sump guard/skid plate, but Nick205 cheated.

Nick205.....i got it folded and welded by my local chap "Wallace Welding". I'd made him a "CAD" template and a former of the lower sump/chassis rails so he could get the folds right, it had to be made from 2 pieces as the sump has an angle change on the bottom and the chassis rails are flat. It's 3mm Ali and quite a hard grade seemingly. 50 quid for material and welding. 1.8 kg added to the car with 6 off M5 rivnuts to attached it.

I decided to get an improved sump guard after my altercation with a steep speed bump which put a hole in the sump and I lost all my oil! See previous thread on that....

Mr SPYDER, it does look a bit like a star destroyer or even a origami coffin. Good pic! I think it looks a bit like Sid James???

gremlin1234 - 24/9/21 at 01:20 PM

the piece at the back looks like it may vibrate at certain speeds, which could cause some strange noises.

Slater - 24/9/21 at 02:03 PM

Gremlin1234, you are correct, I've just been for a drive and I get resonance between 1500 and 1800 RPM. Nothing major but I don't want it to fall off. So I'll need to either brace that bit or fit some kind of stockbridge damper.

Mike Wood - 26/9/21 at 09:17 AM

If you are nearer I would long term lend you a set of metal car ramps, or axle stands, so you were not using a mixture of concrete blocks with bits of wood to get your car higher for sump guard installation.

I know they are light cars, but still could cause serious damage to your head, arms, torso or legs if it moves closer to the ground quickly in an unplanned fashion.

Best wishes
Mike

Thanks for the offer Mike, I do have some axle stands but they don't allow the car to get high enough to get a drill underneath, so I ended up with railway sleepers and bricks under the tyres etc. Not ideal but I couldn't think of another way to do it.

Slater - 5/11/21 at 07:30 AM

Following Gremlin1234s' prediction and it being 100% correct, I made a rib and gussets and got them welded on to keep the thing from vibrating. Works perfectly now.
