The beast.... Pictures!
JoelP - 12/3/04 at 11:05 PM

some pics of the banger. poor light unfortunately conceals the back end, but most is visable...

EDIT: steves re done them so i got rid of these to help the dial up brigade

The oddest thing is the distance between the gear stick and the front wheels!

Look like a Black Cat up a chimney

Peteff - 12/3/04 at 11:20 PM

It was never a great concern of mine before but now I'm worried. How far is my gearstick from the front wheels? I just know I'm not going to get any sleep tonight now. Damn you Joel I'm off out to measure it now and it will be your fault if I catch punimon, pumnoni, sod it a cold.

Peteff - 12/3/04 at 11:21 PM

I'll have to put those wheels back on some time soon if I want to use it.

Steve, you didnt have to go all the way there and lend him a flash!

stephen_gusterson - 12/3/04 at 11:50 PM

Greggors - paintshop pro gamma function I have never been a flasher - m'lord

Joel....

I thought my car was pretty deviant - but thats pretty different!

I have never seen an engine that far back before! If you hit anything you will have a couple seconds to abandon ship before the damage reaches the passenger section!

Where are you gonna get the glass fibre for your unstandard frontal shape?

How does that size compare to the luego beast?

pbura - 13/3/04 at 12:45 AM

Joel, you're a WILD MAN! That baby is BIG!

Y'know, I think you could make a MORGAN out of it! Just half kidding in fact; the front half looks like it COULD take Moggie bodywork.

Looks like it ought to panel OK, I think. Does the nosecone fit?

If you need some help sorting out the back end shape, I suggest putting up a profile, rear, and rear 1/4 shot and letting the Photoshop boys and verbal kibitzers have at it. If you have rear fenders, maybe it would help to clamp them on where you want them.

Looks like you're going to have something to drive soon, should be fun.

Pete

JoelP - 13/3/04 at 12:10 PM

thanks guys, all good. it struckme the other day its got a morgan like backend, i actually chopped it all off the other day (after the pics) cos it was badly designed. no it has more bracing to the shocker pick up point, and thinner tubing to support the outline of the backend. current thinking is that it will have a one piece fiberglass backend, hinged with gas struts, unfortunately that makes it even more morgan like! nowt wrong with that except im not buuilding a morgan...

i got major stuck the other day, had to sit down and make a plan, about 20 odd hard tasks to finish it, which may take all summer to get it compliant. but just gotta soldier on one at a time, and hope! it does help having no job, plenty of free time!

thanks for the pics anyway steve, muchos appreciated! i was relying on the darkness to cloak the embarrasing back end!!

i tell a lie BTW, looks like i butchered it before the photos.

Joel, Whats that piece of (looks like) copper pipe between your front wishbones in the frst picture? Is it to act as a bumper so that the bits behind it dont have to be radiused etc like on a dax? Someone told me to do that but i wasnt sure if it was true.

pbura - 13/3/04 at 12:47 PM

I was thinking that a rounded, humped shape with a lifting lid, like from cars of the 30s, would look good.

BoL on the work situation, btw, not much fun in that

Pete

Thats task 2 on the list, 'radiator bottom hose'. Damned if i know what to do! i've just spent (wasted) £35 on some flexible hose from europa to help plumb in the T from the expansion tank, so that sould be that solved. cut a t (30/32/16mm) from a polo i had, but couldnt make the 35mm copper tube i had link to it. all my hoses were 30 mm, and 5mm of diameter is 15mm of circumference to stretch!

yeah, im gonna get the brakes and radiator done first to restore my flagging motivation, then worry about technicalities like bodywork! and sod going to the lengths of some to make it nice, its an ugly creation but that not important!

if all goes to plan i might get away with retiring soon! at 24 well, nearly... been doing a spot of landlording

stephen_gusterson - 13/3/04 at 09:56 PM

I had thoughts of modding my car to look like a plymouth prowler, or even to have a front like a PT cruiser. The back end has comitted me a bit tho....may not have you if thats a way you wanna go...

I love the look of this car - blows the look of a seven away in my view

not bad that grill, has a certain je ne sais quoi...

pbura - 14/3/04 at 11:30 AM

I've been saying for 35 years (since I was a kid) that Detroit could make a killing from retro cars. If Chevrolet were to re-issue the 1957 Bel-Air, they wouldn't be able to stop the stampede. It's tough being a visionary.

stephen_gusterson - 14/3/04 at 12:56 PM

one of these?

the headlamp nacelles prob wouldnt be allowed cos of pedestrian injury.

some late 50s early 60s UK cars (vauxhalls) looked a tad like that. Crap at the time, but kinda nice now

There is a kitcar replica of the prowler, cant think who makes it now, but it was at one of the shows full of stereo. Like the looks, but not so keen on the front bumpers, im sure they must be there to meet us legislation.

Oh, yeah, they were incredibly popular, couldn't throw a stone without hitting one. I'd say that they've the probably the most collectible American cars of that time in terms of current price vs. original cost.

My own favorite American car for that year was the Corvette: Rescued attachment 415151_29_full.jpg

stephen_gusterson - 14/3/04 at 04:44 PM

yep

there is a nice red and white one in the movie 'true lies' - 'its the vette that gets em wet' was the line I think

We have the odd one here - the pics shown were at a kit show this year - the dash looks great, but would never pass a modern SVA!!

As for a brit car that looks 'a bit' like a 50s yank.... heres an old vauxhall.

It always shocks me to see an American car overseas, like in 'La Dolche Vita'.

That Vette's a nice one, '62 I think. Too bad about the Vauxhall.

The subject of Americanized European cars (things sure are different now!) reminded me of the "baby Thunderbird" DKW 1000Sp:

Hey, we're way OT from Joel's car! I think it would look very good as Prowler-inspired. Still panelled, but with a different nose and the rounded-off rear in GRP.

But I think we'd better let the lad sort his hoses first

stephen_gusterson - 14/3/04 at 05:33 PM

yes - I think we hijacked Joels post quite nicely there....

sorry bout that!

Still, I do think a prowler / pt cruiser type front would look good..

btw - if you think the old vauxhall looks crap, just take a look on

http://vauxhall.co.uk

I dont recon they have got any better.....

This is a ford Capri from the UK - about 1962. They were unloved at the time, and are EXTREMELY rare, but I like em. Cos they are a European car, they of course have a stupid sub 2 litre 4 cyl engine... Rescued attachment ford-capri62a.jpg

Our version of the (better-looking, IMO) Vauxhall:

http://www.chevrolet.com/aveo/gallery.htm

Such a hot seller I haven't noticed one on the road yet.

I suppose that there are a lot of crap-looking cars out there, but I'm less critical of the new ones, for some reason. It seems to take a few years for the REAL clinkers to become obvious.

Wait a minute, I take that back:

I think they could have been more adventurous at the front!!!

In the usa, you had a car (well, many versions of) called the Taurus. Im talking of the one that was made (still?) at the turn of the century.

This was the same car, with european styling. It was nicknamed the frog car. Rescued attachment urgly.jpg
