blimey, who told you?

just need to figure out out how to seal the lens at the front, fit a waterproof switch and house the elecronics and job done.

remember me asking about the gimbal? a clamp for hodling objects to handlebars?

well these will be mountain bike lamps;
photos show them connected to 5 V but I have some RC 7.2 V batteries coming over from Hong Kong that should makethem even brighter. (the driver is multi voltage but I am at the lower end of the range).

What electronis are you using.
this one currently using a modified lm2575 circuit. A bit to big at the moment to fit inside the lamp.

What LED units are you using. Are they the star luxeon LEDs. The 3w ones have to mounted on heat sinks IICRC. I have bought some off ebay for £1.99 , but am looking for RGB ones, but cant find any.

look on RH for different colour emitters.

hmm, very nice, I have to resort to simplistic construction.

The emitter is avaialable in surface mount and mounted on aluminum heat sink, I am using the latter.


I made a disc from split copper pipe and made cuts so I could fold down the sides to make something
like a bottle cap (that is the thing with the 4 holes in the first photo). This acts as the heatsink
the sides contacing the tube for better heat transfer.

The driver board = 3 W LED dimmer for luxeon white is from ebay,

Can't recall ebayer's name but invoice has sure electronics inc, nanjing, china. cost £ 1.09 each

I have a pair of 6v lights 5w & 10w halogens which are great for the road but only last about an hour.
How do these compare to the lights you have built?

these will melt you eyes!!

I have twin halogen - Smart - and have had them for sometime so the silverng is beginning to go a bit.

I ahve compared the LED, running at 5 V (my 7.2 Ni-MH from HK arrived today so should be brighter still) and they are superior.

The LEDs are 3 W but I now see that 10 W are avaialable!!

Give it a couple of years and car headlamps will be LED.

A good halogen bulb can put out some 20lumens/watt (the big ones used i cars or big lamps), but for the smaller ones usually used i bicycle lamps, like the Smart system 11 lumens/watt is more realistic. I've compared a 2*4.5W halogen (xenon) setup to my rebel LED light flashlight (200 lumen max, 112 lumens, 50lumens and 11 lumens optional) and at 200 lumens is really A LOT stronger than 9W of halogen, even the 112 lumen setting outshines 9W halogen. Another factor is the colour tempererature. You probably need more lumens of the yellow halogen light than of the very neutral white LED-light to see equally well.

The unscientific measurements I've made at a very dark field at home shows that 200 lumens (with the beam pattern of my flashlight) give very good illumination up to 40m in front of you (every detail visible) and usable illumination up to 120m away.

Cree led units? Why fit them to your handlebars you could fit them to your helmet and then they go where you're looking.
